Since
the 1992-93 Abkhazian Georgian war, more than 60,000 refugees have been
successfully resettled in Abkhazia, which represents the largest
peaceful resettlement program in modern times. This has occurred in
spite of an ongoing campaign by the Georgian government to politicize
the refugee process by provoking ethnic tensions, creating impediments
to the safe return of refugees and establishing legal and diplomatic
barriers to an international resolution. The following points are designed to provide background on the refugee situation in Abkhazia.

Statement from Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh in Advance of President Saakashvili's UNGA Speech Thursday, 24 September 2009 13:56 Statement from Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh in Advance of President Saakashvili's UNGA Speech President Saakashvili is one of the most dangerous leaders in the world. He has convinced his allies that he supports democracy, yet his own people know that he jails critics and crushes dissent. He speaks of peace, yet he triggers war. His brutal attack on the civilians of South Ossetia in 2008 and his refusal to take responsibility for the unnecessary deaths and widespread damage that resulted is a tragic reminder of his dangerous behavior. His recent confiscation of ships delivering peaceful goods to Abkhazia is yet another example of his reckless decision-making. I understand the United Nations must provide a forum for world leaders, even those who ... >> full artcle...

Abkhazia will one day return to Georgia-Saakashvili

By Louis Charbonneau
UNITED NATIONS, Sept 25 (Reuters) - The Georgian separatist
zone of Abkhazia, which seceded from Tbilisi last year, will
once again be part of the former Soviet republic, Georgian
President Mikheil Saakashvili told the United Nations.
"It will take time, but Abkhazia will once again be what it
was -- the most wonderful part of Georgia," Saakashvili said in
the written text of a speech to the U.N. General Assembly
released late on Thursday.
Russia crushed a Georgian assault on another separatist
enclave, South Ossetia, in August 2008, sending tanks deep into
Georgian territory and shaking Western confidence in oil and
gas routes running through the South Caucasus.
After the war, both Abkhazia and ... >> full artcle...

ABKHAZ MEDIA FEAR FREE SPEECH UNDER THREAT Journalist’s conviction viewed as a warning to critics ahead of presidential elections. By Anaid Gogoryan in Sukhum The conviction of a journalist for libelling Abkhazia’s president, Sergei Bagapsh, has raised concerns for the future of media freedom in the republic. Abkhazia, recognised as independent by Russia, Nicaragua and Venezuela but otherwise considered part of Georgia, holds presidential elections in December. Observers fear the prosecution may be intended as a warning to potentially critical correspondents ahead of the polls. On September 21, the Sukhum city court gave Anton Krivenyuk a three-year suspended sentence - the maximum possible term - for an article criticising the president’s decision to hand over the railway network to Russian control. Originally published on a Russian internet site on June 8, it was widely reprinted ... >> full artcle...

Turkey-Abkhazia relations after Çeviköz
|
During Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu's visit to Tbilisi on Sept.
8-9, Foreign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Ünal Çeviköz drove to the
Abkhaz capital of Sukhumi, where he met with Abkhaz officials.
|
The visit was reported as the first visit to Abkhazia by a Western
diplomat since the five-day war between Georgia and Russia (Aug. 8-12,
2008). However, Abkhazia is a place Western diplomats frequently visit.
EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby was in
Sukhumi in July. Çeviköz
is an experienced diplomat who has served as the Turkish ambassador to
Azerbaijan, worked effectively to relieve tension in the region during
the five-day war and brought the ... | >> full artcle...
