Five Presidential Candidates Registered In Abkhazia
The opposition has accused President Sergei Bagapsh of of turning a blind eye to top-level corruption.

The Central Election Commission of the breakaway Republic of Abkhazia has registered
five candidates who applied to run in the presidential election on
December 12. A sixth would-be candidate, Djamalik Ayba, withdrew his
application before the November 2 deadline. The five are
incumbent President Sergei Bagapsh; his former vice president and
closest challenger in the 2004 presidential ballot, Raul Khadjimba;
businessman and Economic Development Party of Abkhazia Chairman Beslan
Butba; academic Vitaly Bganba; and Zaur Ardzinba, director of the State
Steamship Company. All five have successfully submitted to tests
intended to assess their fluency in the Abkhaz language. Central

MINSK, November 5 - The Belarussian
parliament plans to consider the recognition of Abkhazia and South
Ossetia next week, Russian media reported Thursday.
"Next week,
the parliament will start considering the recognition of Abkhazia and
South Ossetia," the RIA Novosti news agency quoted Vladimir Makei, head
of the presidential administration, as saying.
The Belarusian
parliament has resolved to establish a working group to consider the
recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, a RIA Novosti correspondent
reported on Thursday.
The parliament's CIS and foreign
affairs commission "has resolved to establish a working group from

Abkhaz presidential candidates to be tested for state language knowledge

SUKHUMI, November 3 (Itar-Tass) -- The linguistic commission of the Abkhaz
Central Elections Commission will check presidential candidates’ knowledge of
the state language, Central Elections Commission Chairman Batal Tabagua told
Itar-Tass on Tuesday.
He said the commission had five members – Alexei Kaslandzia, Batal Khagush,
Eva Tania, Adgur Shinkuba and Fatima Kvarchelia.
The candidates will take the language text within several days.
The nomination of presidential candidates ended in Abkhazia on November 2.
The Central Elections Commission received applications from initiative groups,
which had nominated Zaur Ardzinba, Vitaly Bganba and Raul Khadzhimba, and
resolutions of congresses of the United Abkhazia party and the Economic
Development Party.

The Upcoming Abkhaz Presidential Elections Will Test the Republic’s Newly Found Independence
Abkhazia has started preparing
for the main political event of 2009 – the presidential elections.
November 2 was the deadline to nominate candidates for the main
governmental post of this partially-recognized republic. The upcoming
elections are the fourth following the Georgian-Abkhazian armed
conflict of the early 1990s, and each of the previous campaigns
corresponded to particular stages in the internal evolution of the
republic’s de-facto statehood. But this time, there is one fundamental
difference.
The “magnificent five” of the
candidates is made up of Sergey Bagapsh, Raul Hadzhimba, Beslan Butba,

Unknown criminals fired at Abkhazian national bank’s chairman Illarion Argun 1.11.2009 In the morning of October, 28th in Gudauti area unknown persons fired the car of the chairman of the National bank of Abkhazia Illarion Argun who was moving from Gagry to Sukhum for work. As ApsnyPress was informed by the law enforcement bodies, the incident occured nearby 8.15 a.m. by Moscow time near settlement Bambora. Unknown criminals shot from a grenade cup discharge to the car in which Argun was, however the shell traced by past. By a lucky chance nobody suffered. Criminals disappeared from the place of the incident. On the place of incident investigatory groups of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the state security service and a Gudauti area department of internal affairs operated.
