UN Extends Observer Mission In Abkhazia
Georgia -- Abkhazia Map RFE/RL UNITED NATIONS, March 31, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- The UN Security Council today unanimously approved an extension of the observer mission in Georgia's separatist republic Abkhazia through the middle of October.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan had previously asked the council for the extension and stressed the need for the return of internally displaced people in the conflict between Georgia and Abkhazia.
Abkhazia broke away from Georgia following the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. It's had de facto independent status ever since.
Today's renewal follows an agreement on March 29 between Georgia and Abkhazia to resume bilateral negotiations after a four-year break. http://www.rferl.org/featuresarticle/2006/03/965D3FB9-0102-4DBE-9046-5458DDAB389F.html

"Authorities of Georgia should recollect the genocide they’d accomplished in Abkhazia during war of 1992-93. Abkhazia has much more bases to bring an action against the actions of the armies of the State Council rather than the Georgian party". So the secretary of Security Council of Abkhazia Stanislav Lakoba commented to IА REGNUM correspondent the statement of the leader of the Georgian social movement "Our own" Paata Davitaja.
Lakoba emphasized “the facts Davitaja mentioned were not confirmed by the special commission of the United Nations on human rights". "This commission had not recognized the fact of the ethnic cleanings against Georgian population in the territory of Abkhazia", - noted Lakoba.
