Abkhazian president says he is ready to meet with Saakashvili

26/06/2006 17:25 SUKHUMI, June 26 (RIA Novosti) - The president of Georgia's breakaway Abkhazia region said Monday he was ready to meet with the Georgian president if they eventually signed an agreement on security guarantees.

"This meeting should result in a proper document, and should not be held just for the sake of a meeting, as this is not productive," Sergei Bagapsh said.

Abkhazia, in the northwest of Georgia, declared independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, leading to a bloody conflict in the Caucasus. Russia currently has peacekeeping troops stationed in the region.

KEY ABKHAZ MEDIATOR NOMINATED AS GEORGIA'S UN ENVOY. On June 12,
President Mikheil Saakashvili submitted to parliament his nomination
of Irakli Alasania to succeed Revaz Adamia as Georgia's envoy to
the UN. Alasania, 32, is a former chairman of the Tbilisi-based
Abkhaz government in exile and Saakashvili's special aide for
talks with the Abkhaz leadership on ways to resolve the Abkhaz
conflict. Even if the parliament confirms his nomination for the UN
post, he will retain his Abkhaz responsibilities, according to Civil
Georgia on June 12.
Some observers and political figures, however, have
questioned the wisdom of sending Alasania to New York. Civil Georgia
on June 13 quoted opposition parliamentarian Giorgi Tsagareishvili
(Industrialists) as saying "Alasania was the only shining light in
the current government," while independent analyst Giorgi Khelashvili
similarly commented that "I think Alasania would be much more useful

Tbilisi, June 16, Armenpress: Vladimir Badalian, an Armenian parliament member and a cochairman of the Armenian-Russian and Armenian-Georgian Business Associations, told Armenpress a set of documents, which are necessary for starting restoration of the Abkhazian section of the Georgian railway will be ready by the end of the year and the reconstruction will take from 12 to 18 months.
   Badalian said the 197 km-long section of the railroad stretching across Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia needs to be fully restored together with bridges, tunnels and other infrastructure. Badalian said the restoration will comprise two stages-first will be resumed trains for transportation of cargo and then restoration of infrastructure and stations will begin.

Georgia Assails Russian Role in Breakaway Abkhazia

A top Georgian lawmaker accused Russia on Tuesday of blocking international efforts to resolve a long-simmering dispute between Georgia and its breakaway Abkhazia province, the Reuters news agency reports.

The criticism by Georgia’s parliamentary speaker, Nino Burjanadze, during a closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council drew an angry response from Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin.

“I am very disappointed. Burjanadze made a big mistake by this kind of a diatribe against Russia,” Churkin told reporters after the meeting, calling her remarks “completely unacceptable” and counterproductive.

Abkhazia won effective independence from Georgia in a 1992-93 war, and Moscow props it up by paying pensions, issuing Russian passports and allowing cross-border traffic while acting as the lead “facilitator” in the peace process.

Progress in Abkhaz Peace Talks

The fact that Tbilisi and Sukhum come up with new peace initiatives is seen as a positive step, even if they continue to disagree on most issues.

New life was breathed into the Abkhazian peace process this week when Georgian presidential adviser Irakli Alasania personally handed a peace plan to the Abkhaz authorities.

The plan presented by Alasania, together with an Abkhaz plan which President Sergei Bagapsh handed over in Tbilisi on May 15, represent the most detailed documents to be presented since the conflict ended 12 years ago with Abkhazia claiming independence from Georgia – a claim still unrecognised by the outside world.
