Abkhazia refutes information on burning houses by "Group of Georgian Patriots"

Ruslan Kishmaria, plenipotentiary representative of the president of Abkhazia in the Galskiy District, refutes the information, disseminated by a number of Georgian TV companies that the members of the "Group of Georgian Patriots" have burnt down twelve houses in the District.

In fact, the house of Fridon Lagvilava, a resident of the village of Nabakevi, has burned down because of electric wiring malfunctions.

At the same time, Mr. Kishmaria was indignant with presentations on air of a number of Georgian TV companies made by the "Group of Georgian Patriots." Representatives of this Group are openly declaring that by burning down houses of Georgians in the Galskiy District of Abkhazia they take vengeance for their support of ...

Saakashvili finds "Kosovo model" unacceptable for Georgia

President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili has stated today in Brussels that he rejects any parallels between settling the Kosovo status problem and the situation with South Ossetia и Abkhazia.

"The parallels drawn by certain international political players are sometimes based on wishful thinking, and sometimes on one's own political interests," Mr. Saakashvili has stated on the outcomes of his meeting with Javier Solana, EU Supreme Foreign Policies and Security Representative.

The president of Georgia has noted that international recognition of separatist aspirations of Abkhazia and South Ossetia can make a dangerous precedent for other regions of Europe. In Saakashvili's words, the separatist groups are not supported by the majority of population in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and this is an ...

ABKHAZIA POLL PASSIONS RISE

All sides want independence from Georgia, but have their differences over
domestic policy.

By Inal Khashig in Sukhum

In the final week before parliamentary elections take place in Abkhazia, tempers
have boiled over, with the opposition demanding a public apology from the leader
of the breakaway republic Sergei Bagapsh.

On February 26, 19 opposition candidates for the March 4 poll called a press
conference in which they accused Bagapsh of gross interference in the electoral
process and trying to discredit members of the opposition.

They were responding to a television appearance by Bagapsh the day before in
which he was responding to questions sent into the studio and criticised
opposition politicians.

Abkhazia's parliamentary elections are not recognised by the international
community that still regards the region as being de jure part of Georgia, from
which it broke away ...

Ethnic Germans Cut Adrift in Abkhazia
By Kevin O'Flynn
Staff Writer

SUKHUMI, Georgia -- Lavrenty Gart, 71, remembers vividly when the secret police came for his mother after war broke out with Nazi Germany in 1941. He himself wouldn't have survived were it not for his neighbors.

His neighbors -- Poles, Armenians and Georgians -- hid him and family members even though they were Germans.

"It saved us," said Gart, now head of the Society of Germans in Abkhazia. "Nobody asked what nationality you were. There was that kind of friendship among different peoples."

Abkhazia has long been known as a land where an array of peoples, cultures and ethnicities overlap. As early as the sixth century B.C., historian Edward Gibbons noted, 132 tongues could be heard in the marketplace ...

Abkhazia suspends talks with Georgia until release of her two state servants

Until release of two senior employees of the Galskiy District Administration - Fridon Chakaberia and David Sigua - the leadership of Abkhazia refuses to continue dialogue with Georgia. Sergei Bagapsh, president of Abkhazia, has told about it today.

"Our claims to release Fridon Chakaberia, head of administration of the Bagryab village of the Galskiy District, are still ignored by the Georgian party. We understand quite well that the reason of his arrest, and of kidnapping David Sigua, a senior officer of the administration of the Galskiy District, was the so-called cooperation with Abkhazian authorities," Mr. Bagapsh has noted.

Meanwhile, the Security Council of Abkhazia has made a decision on participation of the Abkhazian delegation, headed ...
