Russian-Chechen Information Agency receives "Free Press of Russia 2006" Award
RUSSIA, Nizhny Novgorod. On January 25th, the Russian-Chechen Information Agency, founded by the Society of Russian-Chechen Friendship, received the "Free Press of Russia 2006" Award. The award amount is 20 thousand Euros. According to the conditions of the competition, the award must be used for further professional development of the Information Agency.

The competition was run by the "Freedom Word" fund in Oslo, Norway and ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius in Hamburg, Germany within the framework of a joint project on strengthening professional journalism in East Europe. The awards ceremony will take place on May 19th, 2006, in the Hamburg Town Hall. Editor-in-Chief Stanislav Dmitriyevsky has been invited to participate in the ceremony.

A Nizhny Novgorod court on Friday found a journalist and activist who has campaigned against rights abuses in Chechnya guilty of inciting ethnic hatred, his colleagues said, a verdict he condemned as part of a state assault on nongovernmental organizations.

Stanislav Dmitriyevsky, the head of the Russian-Chechen Friendship Society in Nizhny Novgorod, was handed a two-year suspended sentence. He dismissed his conviction as politically motivated and vowed to appeal it in Russia and the European Court of Human Rights.

"This is part of a major assault on NGOs in Russia," Dmitriyevsky said by telephone after the verdict, branding it "illegal and unfair."

"I consider this case politically directed," Dmitriyevsky said of the charges filed against him in connection with the publication in his group's newspaper ...

Democratic Union joins journalists' action to support Stanislav Dmitriyevsky
RUSSIA, Moscow. To voice its solidarity with Stanislav Dmitriyevsky, who is being prosecuted, Democratic Union decided to publish on its website the addresses by Akhmed Zakayev and Aslan Maskhadov. It was the publication of these documents in Pravozashchita newspaper that prompted Stanislav Dmitriyevsky's prosecution.

The address by Central Coordination Committee of Democratic Union, signed by Valeria Novodvorskaya, states: "To support the initiative of the Internet sites www.prima-news.ru and www.radikaly.ru and in solidarity with Stanislav Dmitriyevsky we will also publish on Democratic Union's website the 'incriminating' addresses and are hereby informing Prosecutor General that his criminals are breeding like rabbits (by literal exercise of Article 19 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights on the right to seek, receive and spread information and ideas by any means and regardless of state borders). We urge all the independent media to do the same".
