FSB Recruits Stage New Anti-Moslim Pogroms in Moscow Region

A FSB-backed "Russian youth organization" said Monday that it had raided outdoor markets in the Moscow region to "help authorities spot illegal migrants", and that police detained several dozen people after fighting broke out.

The little-known youth organization Mestnye (Locals) took the action amid government efforts to tighten restrictions on migrants and bar them from trading at markets - moves strongly criticized by rights activists.

Mestnye said in statement on its Web site that several hundred of its activists on Sunday went to "check" 20 markets in Moscow suburbs for "illegal immigrants working as traders". It said the goal of the raid was to help spot migrants who purportedly "break the law and sell substandard products".

A State Department official criticized Russian democratic backsliding on the eve of a conference on Middle East reform that Russia is co-chairing with Jordan, Bloomberg news agency reports.
``I think it’s clear that the trends in Russia are not good,’’ Barry Lowenkron, assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights, and labor, told State Department reporters en route to Jordan, where a conference on Middle East democracy is set to open tomorrow at the Dead Sea.

Lithuanian and Georgian Foreign Ministers, Antanas Valionis and Salome Zourabichvili signed a joint letter on October 6 inviting the foreign ministers of Latvia, Estonia, Azerbaijan and Armenia to develop Lithuania’s initiative concerning cooperation of three Baltic States and three Caucasian States.

According to the press release issued by the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry on October 7, Antanas Valionis and Salome Zourabichvili proposed to organize the meeting of six foreign ministers in Brussels, where the ministers of NATO and partner states are to gather in December.

According to Lithuanian and Georgian foreign ministers the reforms and regional cooperation experience of the Baltic States is a good example for Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan on their way to European and Euro-Atlantic structures.
