GEORGIA'S BIG MILITARY SPENDING BOOST

Government says sharp rise in defence spending will professionalise army but
questions are asked about why the money is being spent.

Georgia, which has made breathtaking increases in its defence spending over the
last two years, looks set to beat all records this year.

In late June, the Georgian government increased the defence ministry's budget of
513 million laris (315 million US dollars) by 442 million laris (260 million
dollars).

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, SIPRI,
Georgia currently has the highest average growth rate of military spending in
the world. Some independent experts are worried that the spending is not fully
accounted for, while others say that it could undermine the peace processes with
the breakaway territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Shamba received Estonian delegate in Sukhum

Sukhum/Agency Caucasus - , known for its close interest in North Caucasus , offered to mediate between Abkhazians and Georgians. The Abkhazian administration, however, rejected over again the offer to talk to Tbilisi.    

Garri Lahteyn, the Estonian Ambassador to, met in Sukhum, the capital, on Tuesday with the Abkhazian President Sergei Bagapsh and the Abkhazian Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba. Lahteyn called on both Georgia and Abkhazia to start direct negotiations: "There is a need for constructive dialogue that will supply answers to today's facts. is prepared to help effectively in this regard."

Sokhumi/Agency Caucasus – Economic prospectus in Abkhazia continue to receive attention from across Asia . An official visit of an Abkhazian group to was followed by a trip of a group of Singaporean businessmen to Sukhum.    

The Singaporean group of businessmen will meet with Abkhazian Prime Minister Sergei Bagapsh and Abkhazian Parliament Speaker Nugzar Ashuba, said Deputy Foreign Minister Maksim Gvinciya of Abkhazia, and added that the group will also have talks with some government officials and Abkhazian businessmen.

“Sine the beginning of the holiday season in Abkhazia we expects provocations of Georgia. Unfortunately every holiday season begins with that” – president of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh stated on June 4 as IA REGNUM correspondent reported. According to the president, despite of that all the places of tourist groups are already sold; Abkhazia gets ready for the holiday season in the peaceful way.

Let’s remind, the Abkhazian government had been ordered the ministry of inner affairs to undertake all necessary measures for people’s safety during the summer holiday season of 2007.
