On June 1, the head of Abkhazia’s state committee on tourism, Tengiz Lakerbaya, lashed out at Sochi Mayor, Anatoly Pakhomov, for publicly diminishing Abkhazia’ touristic value. The criticism followed comments made by Pakhomov on May 28, when he said that Abkhazia had once been popular with tourists because of low prices there but that because its beaches were not kept clean and the Abkhaz side did not want to simplify travel from Russia into its territory, which was creating long lines on the border, Abkhazia was no longer competitive. Lakerbaya responded to the Sochi administration by saying that Pakhomov’s remarks would hardly increase the number of tourists coming to Sochi. There is an old story about a pogrom in Czarist Russia. During the pogrom, attackers break into a Jewish home, destroy much of the meager property inside and threaten to kill the man of the house. The terrified man pleads for his life and is finally spared under the condition that he teach the Czar’s dog to talk within one year. If he fails, his attackers promise they will come back and kill him. When the attackers leave, the man’s wife says to him "Are you crazy? How are you ever going to teach the Czar’s dog to talk?” The man responds "Who knows? RFE/RL, April 20 -- Nurdan Bayraktar
Golder, head of the South Caucasus department of the Turkish Foreign
Ministry, held talks in Sukhumi on April 19 with Sergei Shamba and
Maksim Gvinjia, de facto prime minister and foreign minister,
respectively, of the unrecognized republic of Abkhazia.
While
Golder affirmed Ankara's willingness to expand ties with the breakaway
Georgian region, the two Abkhaz officials responded coolly, apparently
suspecting that she was acting as a stalking horse for the Georgian
government.
Apsny Press quoted Golder as telling Shamba that the

Obituaries, The Independent -Vladislav Ardzinba, who died after
suffering for almost a decade from a mysterious and increasingly
debilitating illness, was a wartime leader and the first president of
Abkhazia. He was born in May 1945 in the village of Lower Eshera (just
north of Abkhazia's capital, Sukhum), where his father taught history.
He worked at Moscow's Oriental Institute under Yevgenij Primakov, who,
as Russian Foreign Minister, was later to play a role in the post-war
Georgian-Abkhazian negotiating process.
The thesis which earned Ardzinba his doctorate in 1986 was later

Abkhaz passports for travel abroad will be issued to the citizens of
Abkhazia from the beginning of summer. Today the leadership of Abkhazia
has approved the layout of the Abkhaz passport for travel abroad made
in Goznak.
On
Tuesday, April13, the President Sergey Bagapsh held a meeting where the
layout of the Abkhaz passport for travel abroad made by Goznak was
discussed.
The meeting was attended by the Vice President
Alexander Ankvab, the Speaker of the Parliament Nugzar Ashuba, the Vice
PMs of the Government Leonid Lakerbaya, Daur Tarba, Beslan Kubrava and
