Sözleşme, 2: Bu sözleşmede, soykırımının anlamı, aşağıya sayılan fiillerin, ulusal, etnik, ırksal veya dinsel bir grubu, bu niteliği yüzünden, kısmen veya tamamen yok etmek kastıyla işlenmesidir: a) Grup üyelerinin öldürülmesi;
b) Grup üyelerinin fiziki ve zihni sağlığını bozucu eylemler;
c) Grubun, kısmen veya tamamen fizik varlığının yok olmasına neden olacak yaşam koşullarına tabi tutulması;
d) Grup içi doğumları önleyici önlemler alınması;
e) Gruba ait çocukların zorla başka bir gruba transfer edilmeleri.
