Confusion and turnarounds feed doubts about the capacity of justice system to solve murder of Anna Politkovskaya

“The many twists and turns in the case since last week’s announcement of the arrest of ten suspects in the 7 October 2006 murder of Anna Politkovskaya are feeding our doubts over the capacity and determination of the Russian authorities to solve it, nearly a year after the brutal killing of the journalist,” Reporters Without Borders said today.

“Attempts to discredit the case, orchestrated since prosecutor general Yuri Chaika announced the arrests, by those who have reasons not to want the murder solved, have not been any more helpful,” the worldwide press freedom organisation said.

Organizer of the meeting in memory of Politkovskaya will be trialled for too many participants of the action

Andrei Nalyotov, organizer of the meeting in memory of Anna Politkovskaya held on August 30 in the centre of Moscow, will face trial on charges on breaching the established order of organizing actions.

The militia made a protocol on him under part 2, Article 20.2 of the RF Code of Administrative Offences. Mr Nalyotov, an activist of the Committee of Anti-War Actions, told about it to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent himself.

The "Caucasian Knot" has informed earlier that "after the end of the meeting in memory of Politkovskaya, Andrei Nalyotov was detained and delivered to the Tver Interior Department (OVD) of Moscow. The reason was, as militiamen had explained to Nalyotov, that the number of the participants previously coordinated with the authorities was exceeded ...

Advocate of "Beslan Mothers" quits the terror act case

Teimuraz Chedzhemov, advocate for the Committee of Victims "Beslan Mothers," has announced his resignation from the process on the main criminal case about the Beslan terror act, having explained his decision by the murder threats that he had received, the IA "Interfax" informs.

"I've been representing the interests of 'Beslan Mothers' for the third year already. On August 5 this year I received a threat of murder with a warning: 'You've gone too far, stop!' I link the threat only with my active position in Beslan case, since I was not involved in other cases, never got into disputable situations or engaged in any businesses," the lawyer said to journalists today.

In his opinion, the threat is connected with his raising the issue of the criminal guilt of the members of the ...

Moscow to Restrict Public Rallies

Sep. 04, 2007

Moscow authorities will impose restrictions on public rallies near historical and/or cultural sites of the city, PRIME-TASS reported.
Holding public rallies close to historical and/or cultural sites in Moscow will be restricted. Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov has inked the ruling that sets forth actions to implement the law on the RF citizens’ rights to rallies, meetings, demonstrations, marches and pickets in the city.

Amid other things, the ruling spells out procedures for rallies staged near the sites of architecture and arts. The arrangers, for instance, will be liable for the safety of artifacts close to which a rally is held.

Having planned a public rally, the arrangers will first apply to the city's leadership for a sanction for it. The authorities may deny the request if ...
