Alla Dudayeva’s Appeal to Chechen Refugees

Alla Dudayeva, Deputy Minister of Culture of Chechen Republic of Ichkeria
CHECHENPRESS, 26 August 2007

On 16 August 2006 the media published the open letter from Said-Emin Ibragimov to the UN, EU and Council of Europe. Mr. Ibragimov demands that these organizations consider the Chechen question from the legal viewpoint and make a decision as to whether they recognize Russia’s inhuman activities in Chechnya as genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. He also warned he would go on a termless hunger strike after 6 September.

There was no reply. Ibragimov’s voice remained that of one crying in the wilderness of human cruelty.

Since 25 January 2006 any discussion of the Chechen question was stopped in the UN and Council of Europe, since the Russian government had warned these organizations that ‘consideration of the Chechen question was unacceptable’. Russian ...

Anarchist Kalyonov, suspected of blowing up "Neva Express" train, stops his hunger strike

Anarchist from St-Petersburg Andrei Kalyonov, arrested on suspicion of organizing the explosion of the "Neva-Express" train, has stopped his protest hunger strike. His advocate Renat Gusmanov has informed the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent about it and added:

"Andrei has stopped his hunger strike because of sharp worsening of his health, since he needs medical care now. So far, Mr Kalyonov hasn't been provided any medical aid, despite his inability to walk and pains in the stomach."

Andrei Kalyonov, an anarchist and a member of the "Memorial" Society, was on a hunger strike from the date of his detention on August 16, claiming that his arrest was illegal. According to Mr Gusmanov, Andrei made the decision to stop his action independently, and he was not exposed to forced nutrition or other ...

The court on Khudyakov-Arakcheev's case decides to exhume the victims' bodies

The court has made a decision to exhume the bodies of the Chechen residents, of whose murder the officers of internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Evgeniy Khudyakov and Sergey Arakcheev are accused.

Dmitri Rogozin, official Arakcheev's defender, has informed about it: "The only proof of the officers' guilt is the bullet remaining in the body of one of murdered Chechen citizens; this bullet for some strange circumstances was not taken out, therefore, the defence had insisted on exhumation."

According to his story, on September 10 "the complete stuff of the accusation party, the defence and the judge will go to Grozny to take part in exhumation of the bodies from the burial place," the "Echo Moskvy" Radio informs.

Rally Marks Slain Russian's Birthday
UPDATED - Thursday August 30, 2007 9:28pm from our sister station WJLA-TV

MOSCOW (AP) - Human rights advocates, journalists and politicians marched Thursday to the apartment building where journalist Anna Politkovskaya was gunned down to commemorate her birthday and show their skepticism over government claims about who was behind her killing. Between 200 and 300 people rallied in a central Moscow square before walking to the apartment building where Politkovskaya lived. Her killing last October deepened concerns about the safety of journalists and government critics in President Vladimir Putin's Russia.

attending the rally laid roses and carnations at the doorway and taped photographs of Politkovskaya on the wall, along with a sign that read: "The Truth Can't be Killed."

The commemoration on what would have been Politkovskaya's 49th birthday came days after the chief prosecutor announced the arrests of 10 suspects ...

    WASHINGTON, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On September 18, 2007,
the National Endowment for Democracy will present its annual Democracy
Award to an organization and three individuals who have bravely contributed
to increasing and preserving press freedom and independent media in Egypt,
Southeast Asia, Venezuela, and Russia.

"A free press is a critical ingredient for any democracy," said
National Endowment for Democracy Chairman Vin Weber. "In countries with
little or limited press freedom, independent journalists and activists
committed to providing citizens with honest news and information often find
themselves in the vanguard of the struggle for democracy, sometimes with
their lives on the line. This year's Democracy Award calls attention to the
courage of those journalists who risk so much."
