People gathering under a photo of Politkovskaya on Pushkin Square on Thursday evening. The group then held a short vigil outside her apartment building.

Relatives, friends and colleagues of slain Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya gathered on Pushkin Square for a candle-lit commemoration of her life Thursday, which would have been her 49th birthday.

The meeting came on a day Russian media reported that two of 11 suspects arrested in connection with her murder on Oct. 7 had been freed, while five others had complained of being abused during their detention.

Thursday evening, about 250 people gathered in a small corner of the square, much of which was crowded with stages and equipment already in place for the weekend's City Day celebrations.

Seizure of equipment part of Kremlin campaign against civil society

Update:

Yesterday’s seizure of computers at the Tolerance Support Foundation was followed today by a raid on an independent newspaper in Nizhni Novgorod.

At 1 p.m. officers from the economic police appeared at the office of Novaia Gazeta-Nizhni Novgorod, one of Russia’s few remaining independent newspapers. Similar to yesterday’s raid on the Tolerance Support Foundation, police presented a warrant for complete inspection of the newspaper’s financial, administrative and other activities.

After the search the police confiscated all six of the newspaper’s computers for examination for illegal software. Journalists were not allowed to copy any of the information stored on the computers, which contained the newspaper’s entire archive. Zakhar Prilepin, editor-in-chief of Novaia Gazeta-Nizhni Novgorod, told Human Rights Watch that the seized computers were private property of ...

Russia: New Campaign to Silence Rights Activist

Update:

(Moscow, August 17, 2007) – The Nizhegorodski district court granted a government motion to toughen the terms of rights activist Stanislav Dmitrievsky’s suspended sentence. Under the new terms allowed by the court’s decision on August 17, 2007, if Dmitrievsky commits two administrative violations within a year at any time during his four-year probationary period, the government can petition to replace his suspended sentence with a two-year prison term.

Dmitrievsky told Human Rights Watch that the court’s judgment contains only a factual summary of the case and the ruling, but not the judge’s reasons for the decision. Dmitrievsky will appeal the decision.

(Moscow, August 17, 2007) – The Russian government’s latest attempt to silence a leading human rights advocate reflects a deepening crackdown on critical voices in Russia, Human Rights Watch said today. A ...
