Court due to rule on Chechen case
Publication time: 27 July 2006, 11:26
The European Court of Human Rights is set to rule in the case of a Chechen man who disappeared after being detained by Russian forces in 1999. The case was brought by the mother of Khadzi-Murat Yandiyev after she saw TV footage in which a Russian officer ordered her son to be shot.

However, Russia says there was no formal order to execute Mr Yandiyev and no hard evidence that he is dead.

This is the first such case the court is hearing from the Chechen conflict.

Khadzi-Murat Yandiyev was arrested during the military campaign to regain control of the capital Grozny in 1999.

Bush thrusts democracy to fore before Putin talks
By Douglas Busvine and Steve Holland

RUSSIA, Lower Tagil. Sverdlovsk Region. On July 6th, attorney Mikhail Trepashkin was placed in penal isolation for 15 days. The occasion for this punishment was the fact that he transmitted a rough copy of a complaint to the Superior Court of the Russian Federation via defense attorney, Lyubov Kosik, and not through the administration of the IR -13 penal colony, Kosik reported on July 8.

Another of Trepashkin’s attorneys, Elena Liptser, in conversation with a correspondent of PRIMA-News, emphasized that placing her client in isolation (SHIZO) is illegal. Trepashkin is held under supervision in a colony- settling. According to the Criminal-Executive Code, he has the right to send a complaint to the Supreme Court independently.

Lyubov Kosik reported that it is cold in SHIZO. On the second day Trepashkin was allowed a ...

The International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights is calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s partners in the Group of Eight  leading industrialized nations to raise the issue of rights violations in Russia when they meet this week in St. Petersburg, Radio Free Europe reports.
The group, which represents 46 national rights committees, said the other seven leaders should address the plight of political prisoners. It said it was “appalling” that people had been imprisoned in Russia after politically motivated trials.
In a joint statement with the Moscow Helsinki Group, it called on G8 leaders to bring up the issue of rights violation and corruption in Russia’s North Caucasus. It said the “war on terrorism” had become a “pretext for the continuing abuse of human rights” ...
