Relatives of the militants who perished in Kabardino-Balkaria intend to complain to the European Court

The correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot" was informed about it by Ole Solvang, representative of the organization "Legal Initiative for Russia," who visited Nalchik one of these days. Late in 2005, this organization helped the parents to prepare a complaint to the European Court against the refusal to give out the bodies of perished militants for burial.

Ole Solvang met the parents of the casualties. He told them that, apart from objections to the answers of the Government of Russia, they should write to the Court about their moral sufferings caused by cremation of the bodies of their sons.

Ole Solvang said: "We've received the memorandum of the Government of Russia. Now we have time till July 24 for writing objections thereto. The information from this document that the bodies have been cremated is important.

Betraying human rights in Russia

By Allison Gill, published in Público

Moscow - When he was here last week, Prime Minister Jose Socrates told Russia’s President Vladimir Putin that there would be no more European Union moralizing about Russia’s human rights record, saying that “no one should claim to lecture anyone else" [“ninguém pretenda dar lições a ninguém"]. This was a victory for Putin’s increasingly authoritarian policies, a terrible blow to Russia’s besieged civil society, and a bad omen for Portugal’s upcoming presidency of the European Union.
As Russia has become more assertive in international affairs, thanks in large measure to its lock on gas exports to the European Union, it has become increasingly petulant in response to the rare foreign expressions of concern about its worsening human rights situation. At the same time, the Kremlin has adopted more repressive measures at home ...

Teacher ceases to teach children the Russian language because of police beating

By Ruslan Isayev

CHECHNYA - A teacher of Russian language and literature from the mountain village of Benoy-Vedeno has told President Putin in a letter that he is ceasing to teach children the language. Alavdi Akhmatov felt he had no option but to write such a letter because of what happened to him in an incident in early May in neighbouring Dagestan, near the Chechen border.

During his visit to Dagestan he was badly beaten without any reason by local police in the village of Tukhchar in the Novolaksky district. His wife and children who were present in the car were also subjected to taunts and mockery.

Only by a happy chance was he able to escape from the clutches of the ...

Russia responds to European Court on the case of non-giving out militants' bodies for burial in Kabardino-Balkaria

"The bodies of 95 militants who perished in the events on October 13, 2005, in Kabardino-Balkaria were cremated on June 22, 2006," runs the answer of V. Milinchuk, Representative of the Russian Federation at the European Court for Human Rights, to the Memorandum of the European Court on the complaint "Sabanchieva et al versus Russian Federation."

It follows from the answer that the criminal prosecution of "the members of the criminal community" has been stopped in connection with their death, and notifications have been sent to the relatives on impossibility of giving out their bodies with reference to the respective legislation.

As to the conditions the bodies were kept in, the answer runs that "because of a great number of casualties... it was not possible ...
