Sverdlovsk Region. On June 7th, the IR-13 penal colony reported that Mikhail Trepashkin and prisoners Yevgeny Shatsky and Inshukov were joining the hunger strike declared on June 5th by Sergey Naugolnik. Both Naugolnik and Shatsky are in the isolation unit. The demands of the hunger strikers are as follows: 1) that the prosecutor investigate and punish Internal Service Major Golovin, who, the strikers assert, arranges provocations of the prisoners, falsifies charges against prisoners in order to deprive them of conditional early release, and illegally prevents them from leaving the colony zone; 2) the dismissal from his post of Nizhny Tagil procuratorship attorney Klemevtev, who oversees legal affairs in the penitentiary, for idleness and planning to break the law. From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/10/2006 8:04 PM Jun 9 2006 3:54PM Russia alarmed by review of Human Rights' Court judgements MOSCOW. June 9 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry is concerned by what it sees as a tendency at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to review its own rulings and make decisions based on prejudice and bias, the Russian Foreign Ministry has stated. A Friday commentary by the ministry's information department on the Sysoyevs vs. Latvia case at the court says that the ECHR logic is regrettable. "Instead of bolstering the reputation of the court, as a body of international justice it virtually makes it possible to use the court for purposes incompatible with the letter and spirit of the European Convention of Human Rights and opens the door to the application of dual standards and a discriminatory policy by countries of the Council of Europe," the commentary says. 08-June-06 Refugees Unhappy with Georgian Hotel Project People displaced by war and now living in Black Sea hotels complain that they are being short-changed by a scheme to rehouse them, to make way for a huge redevelopment programme. By Revaz Sakevarishvili in Batumi (CRS No. 343, 08-June-06) A massive tourism investment project on Georgia’s Black Sea coast is getting under way despite complaints from refugees who say they will not move out of their hotel accommodation because the compensation on offer is too small. The announcement raised high hopes in Ajaria, but media reports in Kazakstan are now suggesting the scale of the investment will be much lower, at around 200 million dollars. Russian authorities must launch a full investigation into the violent attacks on peaceful gay pride activists in Moscow on May 27 and prosecute those responsible, Human Rights Watch said today. The investigation must also encompass the police response to the attacks. Human Rights Watch called on the authorities to drop charges against participants in pride events for taking part in "an unsanctioned demonstration." Human Rights Watch documented the violence in a briefing paper released today, and called on Russian officials to fulfill their obligation to protect human rights by refraining from homophobic rhetoric and ensuring that freedoms of expression and assembly are upheld. "Victims of prejudice and violence deserve full justice," said Scott Long, director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights Program at Human Rights ... >> full...

My uncle's neighbour took me to Daghestan where some locals showed me how to cross the border; once there I took a taxi to Baku - and here I am." Magomed is looking at me and smiling. He's big and healthy-looking and reminds me of a bookish friend I once had who was killed by Kadyrov's men in Grozny a few years ago. He continued his explanation, saying that he had to cross the border this way because he couldn't afford the $800 price tag for a passport. Magomed felt it was only a matter of time before he'd be arrested again, beaten and tortured. So his father decided that since he was the only ... >> full...
