Egypt deported 4 Chechen students

Publication time: Today at 18:38 Djokhar time

Egypt on Thursday forcibly deported four Chechen students to Russia, where Amnesty International says they risk being tortured, but a traffic jam prevented police from getting a Chechen commander's son to the airport in time to join them.

Four students among dozens rounded up by security services on May 27 were put on a flight to Moscow.

But police transporting Maskhud Abdullayev, were caught up in a traffic jam and the youth did not reach the airport, a friend told AFP.

The rights group expressed concern on Wednesday that 22-year-old Maskhud Abdullayev would be tortured if sent back to Russia. He is the son of Supyan Abdullayev, the leader of an armed Chechen group opposed to Moscow's control of the region.

"A police officer took him to the airport but they were delayed on the way by a traffic jam and the plane had ...

HS: Side Comment: Mikael StorsjöIis A Hero

posted by eagle on as Human Rights

    HS 9.6.2009:

Side comment: Mikael Storsjö is a hero

    By Esa Mäkinen

The writer is a cultural journalist at Helsingin Sanomat

    Moral demands courage

In my books Mikael Storsjö is a hero. The Finnish authorities finds him to be a crook.

Last week the Frontier Guard announced that they suspect Storsjö for aggravated organising of illegal entry.

He had sent 15 Chechens by flying from Istanbul to Helsinki, and they had applied for asylum. Storsjö has also earlier brought Chechens to Finland, and they have been granted refuge.

Moral without deeds is just a collection of polite phrases. According to the law, one has the right to help endangered people, but still few people have the courage to act as Storsjö.

He floats the authorities using his own name, according to the best traditions of civil disobedience.

Chechens living in refugee camps or in bad circumstances, for example in Istanbul, don't dear to return to their ...

HS: Chechen Refugees Came To Finland Via Baku And Istanbul

posted by eagle on as Human Rights

 HS 6.6.2009:

Chechen refugees came to Finland via Baku and Istanbul

Islam Tumsoev wants a good education and a job

He goes by the name of Islam Tumsoev - not to hide his real identity in Finland, but rather so that he will not be recognized in Turkey, Russia, Chechnya, or somewhere else where he has relatives who could end up in trouble because of him.

“I am studying Finnish”, he says in Finnish, almost without an accent, after just a few weeks of lessons.

Tumsoev is one of the 15 Chechens who were brought by human rights activist Mikael Storsjö from Turkey to Finland. The Finnish Border Guard said on Thursday that it believes that the actions constitute aggravated arranging illegal entry into the country.

      Tumsoev, a 30-year-old engineering student, is a ...

HS 5.6.2009

Helsinki entrepreneur says “humanitarian reasons" prompted him to organize illegal entry of Chechens

Border Guard investigates suspected aggravated organizing of illegal entry

Helsinki Internet-entrepreneur Mikael Storsjö says that he is the man that the Finnish Border Guard suspects of arranging the illegal entry of 15 Chechens into Finland.

All of the men, women, and children involved have applied for asylum in Finland and they are being housed at Finnish refugee reception centers.

The Border Guard announced the suspicion on Thursday, saying that the Chechens came to Finland through Turkey. The suspect had organized air travel by three different groups from Istanbul to Finland. He was caught when he flew in with the first group.

First Lieutenant Matti Kettunen told Helsingin Sanomat that the suspect is ...

Rights Groups Highlight Continuing Abuses in the North Caucasus

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor
June 5, 2009 06:40 PM

Human Rights Watch, the Memorial Human Rights Center, and Russian Justice Initiative said in a joint statement on June 4 that the number of European Court of Human Rights judgments holding Russia responsible for serious violations of human rights in Chechnya has surpassed 100, but the Russian government has failed to take appropriate steps to remedy them. The New-York based human rights group and the two Russian rights organizations said that the Strasbourg-based court's judgments "condemn Russia for its refusal to investigate violations properly and failure to hold perpetrators accountable, including for such grave violations as extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances and torture."

According to the three groups, in 102 of the 104 Chechnya judgments, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Russia failed to conduct an effective investigation into the violations, even though in most ...
