Widows of the militants who perished in Kabardino-Balkaria are under pressure

It has become known to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that officers of law enforcement bodies are exerting pressure on the widows of the militants who perished in Kabardino-Balkaria.

Thus, on June 5, 2007, Zhanna Eristaeva, a resident of Nalchik and wife of the perished militant, was summoned to Interior Department (OVD) No. 2 for interrogation. She was asked about her family, her activities, places she visited and persons she met with. Then, the inspector took a photo camera, put her against the wall and made a full-face and a profile photos. Larissa Alakaeva, her mother-in-law, told later that the young woman was all in tears - from abuse and humiliation.

To her question about the aim of photographing, the officer answered, "To start a file."

"What is my guilt?" Zhanna Eristaeva asks. ...

June 21, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that Russian forces were responsible for the killings of four members of a Chechen family in 2003.

Zura Bitiyeva, a political activist and antiwar protester, and three members of her family were shot in the head at night by Russian-speaking masked men who the court concluded were members of the Russian special forces.

The court ordered Moscow to pay Bitiyeva's daughter, a plaintiff in the case who currently lives in Germany, a sum equivalent to $114,000.

Court Backs Police Raid on NGO
The Moscow Times

A Moscow court ruled Thursday that Interior Ministry officers were justified in raiding the offices of the nongovernmental organization Educated Media Foundation and confiscating computers and documents, a lawyer for the NGO said.

The Golovinsky District Court said investigators were correct to confiscate the documents during the April raid because they had to find out why the NGO's head, Manana Aslamazian, was carrying 9,550 euros ($12,400) in undeclared currency when she arrived at Sheremetyevo Airport in January, Aslamazian's lawyer, Viktor Parshutkin, said. Any amount worth more than $10,000 must be declared. Parshutkin said he would appeal the ruling.

Aslamazian was charged with smuggling -- which carries a maximum five-year prison sentence -- on June 15, though Parshutkin said he has received no formal notification.

The Educated Media Foundation is a U.S.-funded NGO that trains journalists. ...

Georgia: Council Of Europe Envoy Discusses Lawsuit Against Russia

Georgia - Zurab Chiaberashvili, Georgia’s permanent representative to the Council of Europe during an interview with RFE/RL, Prague, 15Jun2007
Zurab Chiaberashvili
(RFE/RL)
PRAGUE, June 15, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Georgia's permanent representative to the Council of Europe, Zurab Chiaberashvili, is the driving force behind Georgia's lawsuit against Moscow at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The suit refers to the mass deportation of ethnic Georgians from Russia in the fall of 2006, a measure widely seen as retaliation for the arrest in Tbilisi of four Russian officers on spying charges. Chiaberashvili visited RFE/RL, where he spoke with correspondent Claire Bigg.

RFE/RL: Georgia's Justice Ministry in March announced that Georgia filed a lawsuit against Russia at the European Court for Human Rights. Who actually took the decision to sue Russia over the deportations?

Zurab Chiaberashvili: It was the government's decision. From the start, it ...

Situation of Prigorodny refugees causing concern to human rights defenders

By Umalt Chadayev

NORTH CAUCASUS – Human rights defenders are urging international organizations to direct attention to the situation of displaced persons from the Prigorodny district of North Ossetia, who for fifteen years have been unable to return to their homes and are now being forcibly resettled from the village of Maysky to Novy, a new village that is being created.

Aslambek Apayev, head of the Committee for the Protection of the Rights of Displaced Persons, has written a letter to international organizations asking them to assist in addressing the problem of these settlers, as there remains no other way to draw the authorities' attention to the refugees’ plight.

"The Ossetian-Ingushetian conflict, in which tens of thousands of people suddenly lost their homes and ...
