Finnish News Agency: The family of Chechen leader seeks asylum

The family of Chechen leader Aslan Mashadov, who was killed by Russian forces, has requested asylum in Finland.

Their Russian passports have expired and they are afraid to renew them for fear of official reprisals.

Former independence fighter Mashadov was elected president of Chechnya in 1997, but was killed by Russian forces last March.

The Finnish-Caucasus Associations says that his family has made a plea to President Tarja Halonen, saying that they fear persecution from Russian authorities. They are believed to reside in the Azerbaijan capital Baku, but say they no longer feel safe there.

BAKU. May 9 (Interfax-Azerbaijan) - The World Chechen Congress is seeking asylum in the West for the family of former Chechen separatist president Aslan Maskhadov, who was killed in a Russian security operation more than a year ago, the Congress coordinator said on Tuesday.

"Maskhadov's family needs protection, there is a threat to their life, and so we are sending out appeals all around [for them] to receive asylum in a Western country," Isa Akhyadov told reporters in Baku.

"The situation in Azerbaijan is very complicated, and the circle is getting tighter around Maskhadov's family," he said.

"We have been intensively trying to evacuate the family outside the Commonwealth of Independent States, but unfortunately these attempts have produced no results," Akhyadov said.

"It is a political issue, one that must be dealt with not by any ...
