White House Blasts Russian Authorities for Demonstrations Breakdown

17.04.2007

MosNews
The White House Monday sharply criticized Russian officials for their handling of weekend protests, the UPI news agency reports.

Authorities in St. Petersburg detained scores of individuals after protesters engaged in a March of Dissent rally Sunday, just a day after a similar protest in Moscow led to the arrests of 250, including Russian chess champion Garry Kasparov.

We are deeply disturbed by the heavy-handed manner in which this weekend’s demonstrations in Moscow and St. Petersburg were broken up by the authorities and by an emerging pattern of use of excessive force by the authorities in reaction to similar events, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said. Perino said she doesn’t think President Bush has expressed his opinion directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin yet, but Perino said Bush would urge the Russian government ...

Germany Condemns Russian Police Action at Weekend Anti-Putin Rallies

16.04.2007

MosNews
Berlin — The German government has condemned Russian police use of ’excessive force’ to break up weekend protests against the policies of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the DPA press agency reported on Monday.

A total of 350 demonstrators, including a representative of Germany’s public TV, were briefly arrested in the protests which took place in Moscow on Saturday and the nation’s second biggest city, St Petersburg on Sunday.

A German government spokesman Thomas Steg said that the ’excessive use of force’ by Russian security officials had been a cause for concern.
In particular, Steg said that action against members of the media had been ’unacceptable’ with the German Embassy in Moscow protesting about the detention of accredited journalists.

The German government expects a ’comprehensive statement’ from the Russian side explaining the circumstances surrounding the ...

Protest march in Russia
Publication time: Today at 17:18 Djokhar time
Russian police detained at least 170 people, including chess champion Garry Kasparov, today as they snuffed out an attempt by opponents of President  Vladimir Putin to protest near the Kremlin.

Activists had planned to gather at a city center square about one km (half a mile) from the Kremlin to protest at what they say is Putin's trampling of democratic freedoms and demand a fair vote to choose a new president in 2008.

Teams of riot police, acting on a ruling from the city authorities banning the protest, pounced on protesters as they appeared in small groups near the square and swiftly loaded them into buses.

"The authorities are afraid of their own citizens and they do not want citizens to influence what is happening in the country," Mikhail Kasyanov, a leader of the Other Russia ...

(RFE/RL)
MOSCOW, April 14, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Russian police detained more than 100 anti-Kremlin activists today in a bid to stop an unauthorized opposition rally in Moscow, RFE/RL's Russian Service reported.

Among those detained was Garry Kasparov, the former world chess champion and a leader of Other Russia. The opposition political bloc, which is critical of the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin, says it is using peaceful pressure in an attempt to persuade the authorities to hold free and fair elections next year.

Police and OMON special forces moved to break up the unauthorized rally before it began, but their detention of Kasparov looks certain to provide publicity for Russian opposition efforts.

SOCHI: LAND OF GENOCIDE

SOCHI: LAND OF GENOCIDE

Honorable Members of the Olympic Committee

You could recently appreciate the preparations and promises of the town of Sochi, candidate for hosting the 2014 winter Olympic Games. During your visit, you must have been surely able to travel without any infringement to admire the natural beauty of that region. That is very lucky of you, because it is not the case for a great number of inhabitants of Caucasus where Sochi is situated.  Those who want to travel to a nearby district where they are not registered need a special permit which may take up to 7 days to get!

When USSR collapsed in 1991, all those nations that got away from it could find a certain freedom of movement, except for Caucasians. Their situation as hostages of Kremlin got worse and worse each year. Unfortunately, they cannot even hope that the possibility of Olympic Games' ...
