Russian Activist Forced into Psychiatric Confinement

A Russian opposition activist, who says he was confined against his will to a mental hospital, will remain in the facility after a St. Petersburg court ruled in favor of his compulsory treatment Saturday.  According to the ZAKS.ru online newspaper (Rus), Vadim Charushev is well known as the creator of several political web-resources and social networking groups.

According to Charushev’s attorney, Viktor Grozovsky, the activist was detained by police, then forcibly hospitalized on the night of March 6th.  It remains unclear why Charushev was first arrested.

Grozovsky said he had spoken with Charushev for two hours, and commented that he appeared to be “a completely normal, mentally sane person.”  Charushev told the attorney that he had categorically refused to sign for treatment as a voluntary patient, at which point he was threatened.  The activist was told: “You won’t get out of here, you’ll be ...

Georgia accuses South Ossetia of repressions, Tskhinvali refutes everything

mar 07 2009, 18:00

Georgian media have promulgated, with reference to a source in the local Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), the information that the authorities of South Ossetia had launched mass repressions against those Ossetians, who took part, on November 12, 2006, in alternative election of the President of South Ossetia held in the territory earlier controlled by Tbilisi. Tskhinvali refutes all statements of this sort.

According to Georgia's MIA, Eduard Kokoity's regime plans to carry out similar repressions against citizens of Georgia of Ossetian origin in the Akhalgori (Leningori) District and in the future, as the Georgia-based Internet edition "Our Abkhazia" writes.

In their turn, the authorities of South Ossetia assert that these statements of the Georgian party are disinformation.

"These statements are nothing more than another disinformation disseminated by Georgian leadership, ...

Moscow holds picket for release of Zara Murtazalieva

Today in Moscow, a picket was held with a demand to set free Zara Murtazalieva, a native of Chechnya, convicted on accusation of preparing a terror act, and to release other women-political prisoners.

The action, organized by the Union for Solidarity with Political Prisoners, was attended by 25 persons. The picketers assert that the investigation on Murtazalieva's case was prejudiced, and her guilt was not proved.
They kept shouting: "Medvedev, release women!", "Stop torturing women!", "Freedom to Murtazalieva!", "Freedom to Bakhmina!" and others. In their hands, they held posters: "Our freedom - your bad work?" and "Freedom to political prisoners!" as the Internet edition "Kasparov.Ru" reports.

Zara Murtazalieva, 26, is in prison for five years already. On January 17, 2005, the court sentenced Murtazalieva to 9 years of general custody colony, having ...

Caucasian Knot: Human Rights Activists Of Kabardino-Balkaria Link Restriction Of Juries With The Nalchik Attack Case

Human rights activists of Kabardino-Balkaria link restriction of juries with the Nalchik attack case

mar 07 2009, 13:00

The participants of the roundtable, held at the Public Human Rights Centre of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) believe that the restriction of juries is related to the particular criminal case, which considers the events on October 13, 2005, in Kabardino-Balkaria.

"In our opinion, the refusal from juries in cases dealing with terrorism and other anti-state crimes means a departure from democracy standards. These amendments are contradictory to the Constitution," said the head of the Centre Valery Khatazhukov in his opening word.

In Mr Khatazhukov's opinion, the very fact that at the process in the Supreme Court of Kabardino-Balkaria the prosecution stood for cancelling the jury on the criminal case on the events of October 13, 2005, indicates that the accusation party was not sure of ...
