Circassians Will Demonstrate against Sochi Olympics in front of the Russian Embassy in Tel Aviv
On Monday, February 17 , The Circassian community in Israel is planning a demonstration in front of the Russian Embassy in Tel Aviv to protest the holding of the Winter Olympics in their historical capital – Sochi .
Sochi, known to them by it’s Circassian name "Shache”, was the last stronghold of the Circassians in the Russian-Circassian War (1763-1864) during which one million and a half of them were liquidated in a genocide, and hundreds of thousands were expelled in mass deportation to the Ottoman Empire. the port of Sochi , was the main port of deportation after the war. Today 90 % of the Circassian people scattered in more than 50 countries with diaspora that numbers between 6 and 7 million people , of whom about 4,000 live in Israel.
