ST. PETERSBURG, Russia—An African student was stabbed to death and another was seriously wounded in separate attacks that Russian prosecutors called likely hate crimes.

The students were assaulted on the same street as they walked from the subway to their university dormitory Saturday night, law-enforcement officials and a student group said yesterday.

In the first incident, attackers slashed a student who managed to escape, said Aliu Dumkara, head of African Unity, an advocacy group for African students in St. Petersburg. He said the injured student was either from Zambia or Kenya. In the second attack about two hours later, a Cameroonian student was stabbed and killed, Dumkara said. A Namibian friend ran away uninjured, he said.

A Cameroonian student of a Russian university was killed and another received severe injuries in St. Petersburg on Saturday night, news agencies reported Sunday.

Several Cameroonians were walking to their hostel when they were attacked by about 10 men. One of the students died of a throat wound, another was rushed to hospital in a severe condition, the press service of the local Interior Ministry department told Interfax.

The murdered student only arrived in Russia two months ago for his higher education program.

Law-enforcement agencies are investigating the incident, but no criminal proceedings have been launched so far. Racial hatred is among the versions being looked at.

MOSCOW. Dec 26 (Interfax) - Seventy-one people have died of hypothermia in Moscow this winter, a source in the city medical emergency service told Interfax on Monday.

Ten dies from hypothermia last week, the source said.

The first deaths from hypothermia in Moscow occurred in late October.
