Journalists of "Ren-TV" kidnapped and beaten in Ingushetia return to Moscow

Journalists of the "24" news group of the "Ren-TV" Channel - Artyom Vysotskiy, Stanislav Goryachev and Karen Sakhinov, who had been detained in Nazran, have arrived to Moscow. Nothing threatens their lives any longer.

According to Mr Orlov himself, who was kidnapped from the hotel in Ingushetia together with the journalists, the aim of the kidnapping was not to let the TV crew film the mass protest rally in Nazran. This was the reason why the correspondents had been kept for so long, almost till the end of the rally, at the City Department of Internal Affairs, Oleg Orlov has noted.

Publication time: 29 November 2007, 10:52
Amnesty International said on Wednesday Russian authorities were arresting and harassing critics such as opposition leader Garry Kasparov to silence them in the run-up to the December 2 parliamentary elections.

The rights group called for the immediate release of Kasparov, a former international chess champion who is serving a five-day sentence at a Moscow detention centre for leading a protest on Saturday against President Vladimir Putin. He is due to be released on Thursday.

"Amnesty International considers him to be a prisoner of conscience and calls for his immediate release," the rights group said in a statement titled "Russian Federation: systematic repression on eve of elections".

"Several witnesses told Amnesty International that they had overheard conversations among the police indicating that it had been planned in advance of the march to detain Garry Kasparov."

European rights court blames Russia for more killings in Chechnya
Publication time: 29 November 2007, 17:22
The European Court of Human Rights on Thursday found Russia responsible for the death of three Chechens during an armed raid in the restive province's capital, and ordered Moscow to pay their relative €60,000 (US,428) in damages.

The three died in January 2000, when Grozny came under heavy bombardment by the Russian military. The house where they had been hiding was set on fire, and they burnt to death. One of them also had gun wounds.

Their relative, who lodged the case with the Strasbourg court, "had provided sufficient evidence to prove that (they) had been killed by the Russian military ... Therefore, the court established that the state had been responsible for the deaths," the court said. It also said the authorities had failed to carry out a proper ...
