Protests planned after soldiers kill three Chechen civilians

MOSCOW. Nov 19 (Interfax) - Rights groups plan large-scale protests in Chechnya in response to the November 16 killing of three Chechen civilians by Russian soldiers on the outskirts of the Chechen capital Grozny, Nurdi Nukhazhiyev, head of Chechnya's constitutional rights defense service, said on Saturday.

The late night incident occurred on Said Baduyev Street on the outskirts of the village of Staraya Sunzha.

"Persons in camouflage uniforms and masks who identified themselves as law enforcement officials arrested Yusup Usmanov, Khusain Akhmadov and Dzhambulat Dushayev and, without explanation, laid them on the ground and killed them by shooting each in the back of the head," the Grozny police authority told Interfax.

The Russian Defense Ministry has admitted that the crime was committed by servicemen.

The U.S. Congress has approved a resolution urging President <NOBR>Vladimir Putin’s</NOBR> administration to fully protect religious freedom, saying religious minorities in Russia were suffering from harassment and violence, France Presse reported.

“Such episodes are becoming alarmingly common,” said Chris Smith, the Republican Representative from New Jersey.

“Considering the challenges being faced by religious communities in this Putin era, this resolution urges the government of Russia to ensure religious freedom for all,” said Smith, who chairs the House of Representatives subcommittee on human rights which adopted the bill.

Russian authorities have come under fire from human rights campaigners and religious groups for favoring the majority Russian Orthodox church over other denominations and clamping down on the activities of foreign missionaries.

Under Russian law, religious groups must be registered with both local and federal authorities.

As IА “Caucasus Times” informed on November, 19th referring to the Russian BBS branch, one of the world most known legal expert organizations accused the Russian special services of tortures of the suspected of participation in the Nalchik attack.

The "Human Rights Watch" organization considered that the Russian authorities under tortures received confessions of the arrested persons.

On October, 13th as a result of the attack of insurgents the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria more than 120 people were lost.

Representatives of the Russian authority rejected charges in excess of their powers and rigid treatment of arrested persons.

"Human Rights Watch" stated that its employees had collected convincing proofs according to which, at least, 8 persons from among the arrested after the attack had had undergone to the illegal treatment. As the organization approved they beat ...

Demonstration taking place in Grozny

GROZNY. Nov 21 (Interfax) - A protest against the recent tragic incidents in the Chechen villages of Staraya Sunzha and Starye Atagi is underway in downtown Grozny. Several local human rights groups organized the demonstraion which was sanctioned by the department for constitutional rights of Russian citizens in Chechnya.

Representatives of about 20 human rights organizations, members of youth organizations and Grozny college students are taking part in the demonstration, department head Nurdi Nukhazhiyev told Interfax.

Demonstrators are demanding that armored personnel vehicles be banned from Grozny streets, unnecessary checkpoints be dismantled, joint patrols of the Chechen Interior Ministry and OMON servicemen be placed at the remaining checkpoints and that servicemen be held accountable by law.

SPAIN. Palma de Mallorca. The 175th session of the Executive Committee of Liberal International - the Association of Liberal Parties and the World Peace Movement, was held on the 5 – 6th of November. The Secretary for International Relations of the Cuban party of Democratic Solidarity and correspondent of the Russian information agency PRIMA –News, journalist Adolfo Fernandez Sain, has advanced in the competition for the Freedom Prize given out yearly by Liberal International.

Chairman of the Liberal Party of Cuba, Hector Maseda Gutierrez is also a finalist. Both dissidents are now in prison. Adolfo Fernandez has been sentenced to 15 years, and Hector Maseda to 20 years in prison.
