Trepashkin to be released on December 1

The Sverdlovsk Regional Court has stated that the imprisonment term of Mikhail Trepashkin, ex-FSB lieutenant colonel, expires on November 30 this year. By doing so, the Court has partially satisfied the inmate's cassation complaint demanding to cancel the decision of the Nizhni Tagil District Court to toughen his custody conditions and extend his term till December 19.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told about it right after passing the verdict by Gleb Edelev, coordinator of the Ekaterinburg Movement against Violence, who was present in the courtroom.

"It turned out that Dmitri Ilyutik, judge of the Tagilstroy District Court of Nizhni Tagil, had passed his ruling to extend Mikhail Trepashkin's term only on the basis of a certificate submitted by the administration of the corrective colony. The court had failed even to consider the grounds for ...

Istanbul - Both the Caucasian Foundation and the Agency Caucasus officials are attending November 15-18 the International Non-Governmental Organizations' Fair in Istanbul.

Officials of both organizations are seeking to maintain contacts with representatives of both Turkish and foreign civil society organizations as officials of such organizations are gathering for the first time together in Turkey at the invitation of the Foundation of Volunteer Organizations of Turkey, or TGTV.

Why Tlisova Left Russia

Writing in the Moscow Times Yulia Latynina (pictured), who hosts a political talk show on Ekho Moskvy radio, one of the last bastions of opposition speech in Russia, tells the sad story of journalist Fatima Tlisova:

An article ran 11 days ago in London's Sunday Times about a Russian journalist requesting political asylum in the United States. Working under the pseudonym of Maria Ivanova, she is an expert on the Caucasus region and claims to have been poisoned last autumn.

Up until last Thursday, people unfamiliar with the specifics of the story were trying to guess her true identity. Those who knew the whole story, however, were praying for her life. This is because Fatima Tlisova -- former correspondent for Svoboda, Novaya Gazeta and The Associated Press, head of the North Caucasus bureau of the Regnum online news ...
