Public Chamber dissatisfied with State Duma's little attention to NCOs

The Public Chamber of the Russian Federation (RF) is dissatisfied with the State Duma: during the recent four years the legislators have failed to pass at least a law in support of the activities of non-commercial organizations (NCOs) and patrons of art.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed about it by political scientist Inna Prikhozhan, head of the Institute of Civil Society and a member of the Public Chamber of the Volgograd Region, who took part in the experts' meeting of the Commission of the RF's Public Chamber for Development of Civil Society, held in early November in Moscow.

The experts' meeting sharply criticized the lawmaking practice of the 4th Convocation State Duma, which has failed to pass at least one law on environment preservation. The experts also criticized the Forestry Code ...

William Bowring, British human rights activist who defended the rights of Chechnya residents, deported from Russia

William Bowring, a British human rights activist, who stood for the interests of the residents of Chechnya at the European Court, has been turned out of Russia.

The "Kommersant" newspaper writes that Professor William Bowring arrived to Astrakhan on November 15 for participating in the seminar "Application Practice of the Code of Administrative Offences by Common Courts' Judges", organized by the Judicial Department of the Astrakhan Regional Court.

On November 17, employees of the passport and visa service checked up the Professor's documents at the "Victoria Palas" hotel and found out that instead of a business visa he had a tourist one in his passport. It served as a pretext for deporting the Briton from the country.

People from the FSB (Federal Security Bureau) have confirmed to ...

United Nations phase out their humanitarian projects in Northern Caucasus

The United Nations are phasing out their humanitarian projects in Northern Caucasus, since they do not consider Chechnya, Ingushetia and other Russian Republics to be a disaster zone any longer. The RIA "Novosti" reports that this fact was stated by Vasily Likhachov, Deputy Chair of the International Committee of the Federation Council of Russian Parliament, after his meeting with John Holmes, UN Deputy General Secretary for Humanitarian Aid.

It was a mutual Russia-UN move towards each other. "Chechnya, Northern Ossetia, Ingushetia, Karachaevo-Circassia need no foreign humanitarian aid any longer, they have become self-sufficient, although not all the problems have been settled yet," Mr Likhachov has noted.

According to his story, the shortage of local budgets for final accommodation of refugees will be compensated from the federal budget.

Starting from 2000, the volume of ...

Akhmed Zakaev's speech on the eve of the first anniversary of Alexander Litvinenko’s death hosted by Lord Pearson of Rannoch

SIA CHECHENPRESS November 22, 2007

It was a special feature of Sasha that he never kept his friends waiting. He came to visit you more often, he telephoned you more often, and in every other respect too gave much more than he could ever be given in return. Sasha was one of that rare breed of unselfish people who, when they perform a valuable service, manage to leave you feeling that you are in no way indebted to them.

One year on, I still have not plucked up the courage to tell my grandchildren that Sasha will never be coming to play with them again, or to take them out on a trip. Even at their age, one year is too short a ...

Sangadzieva: Gannushkina uses every opportunity to help particular people

Inna Sangadzhieva, project coordinator of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee for the former USSR, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the Andrei Sakharov's Award was adjudged to Svetlana Gannushkina, Chair of the "Civil Assistance" Committee, for her whole-hearted and self-sacrificing help to particular victims of rough violations of human rights.

"As of today, Ms Gannushkina is one of the most active human rights defenders. She is dedicating all her life, almost 24 hours a day, to helping particular persons. First of all, she thinks about people, and after all the others - about herself," Ms Sangadzieva explained the motives according to which the Board of the Helsinki Committee in Oslo had nominated the Russian human rights activist for the Award.

Inna Sangadzhieva has also said that Svetlana Gannushkina keeps working with refugees from Chechnya, ...
