13.10.2006

"We, legal experts, consider that in the events in Nalchik were caused by numerous facts of prosecution against Moslems for their religious belief", - declared the executive director of the All-Russian public movement "For human rights" Lev Ponomarev at the press conference in Moscow devoted to the forthcoming anniversary to the tragical events in Nalchik of October 13, last year. "Unconditionally some representatives of the armed underground, connected with the Chechen insurgents, also participated in the action, but basically the young people, which, to all the attributes, had taken weapon in hands for the first time were lost", - ascertained Ponomarev. Russian-Chechen Friendship Society Closed

Russia -- Stanislav Dmitrievski, the head of the Russian-Chechen Friendship, in court, 3 Feb. 2006
Stanislav Dmitrievsky, the head of the Russian-Chechen Friendship, in court in February
(TASS)
PRAGUE, October 14, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Amnesty International has denounced the October 13 decision by a court in the Russian city of Nizhnii Novgorod to shut down the Russian-Chechen Friendship Society (RCFS).

The RCFS monitors human rights in Chechnya.

An Amnesty International spokesperson said the decision appears to be "the latest move in a carefully calculated strategy to get rid of an organization that has been outspoken on behalf of victims of human rights violations in Chechnya."

The court based its decision on a law that makes it illegal for a nongovernmental organization to be headed by a person convicted of "extremist" activities.

The executive director of the RCFS, Stanislav Dmitrievsky, was convicted in ...

Journalism Watchdog Condemns Closure of Chechen Rights Group, Fears Silencing of Critical Website

14.10.2006

MosNews
The Committee to Protect Journalists condemned the closure earlier this week of a Russian nongovernmental organization which publishes an online newspaper regarded as one of the few reliable sources of news on Chechnya, the CPJ said on its official website Friday.

The closure comes just six days after the murder in Moscow of investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, a fierce critic of the Kremlin’s policies in Chechnya.

The Russian-Chechen Friendship Society (RCFS), a human rights group based in Nizhny Novgorod, southeast of Moscow, was ordered closed earlier this week, by a regional court under new legislation restricting NGOs. The law was enacted by President Vladimir Putin in January amid local and international criticism.

RCFS publishes Pravo-Zashchita (Rights Defense) online. The fate of the publication is unclear. A printed edition of Pravo-Zashchita with a circulation ...

Good statistics demand torture
INGUSHETIA, Nazran. (CNO). On September 15, in the region of the Nazran Central Market, officers of the Ingush police force detained Chechen forced migrant Imran Dukhigov. According to the Chairman of the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of Forced Migrants, Aslambek Apayev, the police delivered Dukhigov to the Office of Internal Affairs in Transportation (LOVDT), where they suggested that he "confess" that he was carrying a packet containing narcotic substances. In this case, the policemen told Dukhigov that they had orders from Rostov, and a confession was necessary for department statistics.

After Dukhigov refused to slander himself, they subjected him to severe beatings. Fearing for his health, he was forced to sign all papers. After this, Dukhigov was given a packet containing a white substance, which was then "discovered in the search". Dukhigov’s passport was also ...
