RUSSIA, Moscow. The Public Committee for the Defense of Mikhail Trepashkin appealed, in an October 6 statement, to authorized Human Rights Ombudsman of Russia, Vladimir Lukin, to be present on October 10 in Ekaterinburg for the examination of a writ of appeal to the court's decision to increase Trepashkin's sentence.

The appeal read:

"Respected Vladimir Petrovich! We, members of Public Committee for the Defense of Attorney Mikhail Trepashkin, appeal to you for help to restore the rights of political prisoner Mikhail Trepashkin. We remind you that Mikhail Ivanovich Trepashkin is being deprived of necessary medical aid, and that in serving his sentence at St. 73-1 YUK he is 2200 km from home, which is also a violation of the rights of his young children. For 7 months, Mikhail Ivanovich has ...

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Police clamped tight security on Moscow on Sunday for protests remembering murdered journalist Anna Politkovskaya and ahead of a Kremlin birthday party for President Vladimir Putin, whose policies she criticised.

Up to 2,000 people, many holding carnations and pictures of the reporter, attended a sombre rally in Pushkin Square under rainy, cold skies to mark the anniversary of her death.

"We should fight for freedom," the editor of Politkovskaya’s newspaper Dmitry Muratov told the crowd, which also included members of the "Other Russia" dissident group.

"We should keep Anna in our hearts and we should not follow the instructions of Putin".

Hundreds of extra police, some on horseback, patrolled nearby while vanloads of additional officers waited in side streets but no trouble was reported. Local media said 2,500 extra police ...

Foreign rights activists detained by police
Updated: 10/07/07 6:40 AM

MOSCOW (AP) — Police on Saturday detained several foreign rights activists trying to attend a conference commemorating Anna Politkovskaya, the Russian investigative reporter and Kremlin critic who was murdered one year ago, activists said.

The detentions occurred on the eve of the anniversary of Politkovskaya’s execution-style slaying in her Moscow apartment building entryway. Other rights activists, journalists and some of Russia’s beleaguered opposition planned commemoration ceremonies today in Moscow.

Politkovskaya won international acclaim for her reporting of atrocities against civilians in war-scarred Chechnya, and her killing cast a harsh light on the safety of journalists and government critics under President Vladimir V. Putin.

The five detained activists — including citizens of Spain, Britain and Germany — were among dozens who traveled to the city of Nizhny Novgorod for the conference.

Most peoples have had, at certain stages in their development, a penchant for collecting the heads of their enemies. The ancient Celts did it, the Scythians did it, even in Medieval Europe it was quite widespread, while Samurai warriors presented severed heads to their lords as proof of their valour. It appears that in Russia, though, old habits die hard.

Recently a Moscow court rejected a rather unusual claim from a Dagestani resident. The man wanted the St. Petersburg Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, also known as the Kunstkamera, to return the skull of his ancestor – famous Caucasian warlord Haji-Murat Gajiyev who fought the Russians together with the legendary Imam Shamil in the mid-19th century, and perished way back in 1852.

Russian soldiers presented Haji-Murat’s head to the Tsar’s governor in the region and ...
