In Germany, Putin called the killing of Anna Politkovskaya a "disgustingly cruel" crime that cannot go unpunished, but also played down her influence on Russian political life as "very minor." Politkovskaya, 48, was fatally shot in her apartment building Saturday in an apparent contract killing. Her death threw a new spotlight on the risks faced by journalists who criticize the Russian authorities and dig deep to expose abuses. Anna Politkovskaya, renowned for her hard-hitting stories about human rights abuses in Chechnya, was shot and killed on the stairs of her apartment building on Saturday evening. Gorbachev condemned the killing as a “blow to all democratic, independent press, a grave crime against the country and all of us.” The former Soviet leader, who part-owns the biweekly Novaya Gazeta where Politkovskaya worked, said the newspaper would conduct its own investigation into the murder. Police sources said it looked like a typical contract killing connected with the journalist’s reporting. They said investigators were working on several theories, including the “Chechen trail.” Politkovskaya revealed in a recent interview that she ... >> full...

The number of trespassing from Russia to Finland has increased, Finnish regional daily Suomen Sanomat reported. It quoted the Finnish Border Guard as saying that in the first eight months of this year, 21 trespassers from Russia had been caught in Finland, up from 9 in the same period last year.
Most of the Russians went uncaught.
A few days ago, as reported by the Kavkaz Center, the Russians land-mined their tiny border with Norway to stop mass exodus of Russian from their rogue country.
Land mine laying is strictly forbidden by international conventions which have also signed by Russia.
