EU partner Russia is 'crushing democracy', NGO says
17.01.2007 - 09:28 CET | By Andrew Rettman
EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU "strategic partner" Russia is "crushing" democracy NGO Freedom House has warned in its 2006 survey, as Germany's Angela Merkel gears up to meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Sunday (21 January) to break the ice on a new "Strategic Partnership Treaty."

Thu., Jan. 18, 2007
NEW YORK, Jan 18 (OneWorld) - Last year millions of people in many countries lost their lives as a result of wars, violence, disease, and hunger, yet the major television networks in the United States did not tell their stories to the U.S. public, a new study on media coverage notes.

The staggering human toll taken by tuberculosis (TB) and malnutrition as well as the devastation caused by wars in the Central African Republic, Sri Lanka, and the Democratic Republic of Congo were almost completely ignored by the leading television networks, according to a well-respected medical aid group that monitors media coverage on humanitarian issues at the end of each year.

In its annual report for 2006, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, said it found very ...

MOSCOW, Jan. 18 -- The European Court of Human Rights ruled Thursday that two Chechen brothers were tortured in their strife-torn Russian republic and that authorities there failed to investigate their allegations of abuse. Azerbaijani law defenders threat to complain against Russia to the Council of Europe

Azerbaijani human rights activists can apply their complaint to the Council of Europe in connection with deportation of Azerbaijani citizens from Russia. The correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot" has learnt about it from the Azerbaijani human rights activists.

One of them - Eldar Zeinalov - has noted that should the authorities of the Russian Federation breach the rights of Azerbaijani citizens while deporting them, the local human rights defenders should surely lodge a complaint against Russia to the Council of Europe (CE) and other international organizations. "In such case, we shall even strive for initiating debates at the Council of Europe on the issue. However, so far we ...
