On a hunger strike since September 1, Ibragimov’s seemingly journey to his death has aroused serious concerns among his supporters over his deteriorating health condition. A committee was even set up to save him. Larisa Volodimerova, head of this committee, announced willingness to replace Ibragimov in his hunger strike in protest at inattention from Western leaders to his condition: “Said Ibragimov, lawyer and defender of human rights, has been on a hunger strike for the past three weeks in a bid to call on the Council of Europe to resolve the question of Chechnya. The committee, which was set up to save Ibragimov and which brings together representatives from many countries, announces resolution on the part of Larisa Volodimerova to replace Ibragimov in his hunger strike, if Ibragimov goes into coma or dies, outside the Council of Europe both to protest its inattention and to call political attention from Secretary-General of the Council Terry Devis, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to the killings of Chechens.” Volodimerova, who is leading the Human Rights Movement of Marexa, Holland, is a poet and writer.
