On August 10, 2007 in Shamilkala (former Makhachkala) personnel of security services crashed a protest demonstration organized by relatives of disappeared people. Several participants of the demonstration were beaten.
Termless protest action was organized by members of public movement "Mothers of Dagestan", the notification about the event, according to the activists, was sent in advance, according to law.
The protest action started at 2 p.m. About 30 women, who gathered at the Government building demanded from the authorities to establish the whereabouts of their relatives, young men who disappeared in Dagestan during the last several months. "Mothers" claim that their children were abducted by personnel of security services.
At around 5 p.m. two officers (According to "Mothers" - in the rank of semi-colonel) said that the demonstration was not sanctioned. Svetlana Isaeva, the mother of abducted Isa Isaev, showed the officers their notification. Sometime later one of them commanded "Oust them from here!", and the security servicemen started to roughly push the protesters.
Several people were beaten with clubs and fists, three men were detained and delivered to Sovetsky ROVD of Shamilkala. One of the detained, Murtuz Shakrullaev, was not a participant of the action, he was passing by and saw women being beaten by the police. He asked policemen "How can you beat women!", after which he was detained.
A detained men named Chupan was released the same day, Murtuz Shakhrullaev - on the 11th of August, the third detainee - Ismail Butdaev was released 48 hours later. On August 10, Butdaev's lawyer was not allowed to see his client, policemen refused to take a food package from the relatives and insisted that Butdaev had been released. The package was received only after a representative of Prosecutor's office interfered. Probably, numerous phone calls from human rights defenders also had an impact. Shakrullaev and Butdaev were accused of "insubordination to personnel of police". Court hearings on their case are appointed for August 15, 2007.
