According to the United Civil Front a spontaneous meeting took place on 27 December in the central square of Shamilkala (former Makhachkala) the capital of Dagestan. The meeting ended with those who had gathered being beaten, mainly women, and the expulsion of a mass of people from the square by members of the police.
The reason why a group of determined people had gathered in the cold was the kidnap of a young man, Umar Ibnykhadzhirov, a resident of the village of Talga on 20 December by unknown armed people wearing masks. Umar's relatives presumed that the local police were involved in the kidnapping.
There is no information about the kidnapping. People are demanding the involvement of the government in resolving the problem. No one within the puppet republic's government would meet with a delegation from the protestors. Duty policemen told them that there was no one available who dealt with issues of order and protecting civil rights.
