The procuratorship has instigated a criminal case concerning the illegal detention on October 15 of two activists of the ""Defense" movement, and an operations duty officer from the Arbat has been discharged from the police, reported "Defense" on December 18. The procuratorship of the central region of Moscow and the Presnenskeyeo region addressed the matter of the militiamen's conduct. The OVD officers are threatened with up to 2 years in prison.
A participant in the action Against the Anti-Georgian Hysteria, Roman Udot was detained by police for removing a provocateur from a bus stop. Another activist, Pavel Shaykin, attempted to assist his comrade and as a result was also detained by police. Although the police knew that the young people were, in essence, doing their duty, Udot and Shaykin were accused of petty hooliganism. But the court did not find a basis for the activists to be detained and returned the matter to the police.
According to Pavel Shaykin, the MVD and CAO instigated a criminal case and transmitted him to the procuratorship of the Presnenskeyeo region. The GUVD of Moscow discharged OVD Arbat Operations Duty Officer Captain Meshcheryakov, who bore responsibility for the actions of the police on October 15. The procuratorship OF CAO is conducting the investigation into the matter.
An important precedent, that representatives of organs of power will not remain unpunished for arbitrariness against members of oppositional organizations, has been created. Recently, the illegal detentions of civil activists, including participants in "Defense" has become a general phenomenon, about which Defense communicated on December 16. In its communication, it emphasized that the basic fault lies not in the police, but in the Special Services officers, who called for the detentions. Pavel Shaykin intends to solicit for the restoration to work of the discharged Arbat OVD officer and less severe punishment for him. The responsibility for the pursuit of the opposition activists must be carried by officers of the FSB and UBOP, he emphasized.
