The Federal Prison Service of Russia (FSIN) will not permit British policemen investigating Aleksandr Litvinenko's death to meet with attorney Mikhail trepashkin, who is in a penal colony, according to December 5 media reports. Trepashkin has stated that he possesses information about plans to murder Litvinenko and he is ready to transmit this information to Scotland Yard. Trepashkin's attorney Elena Liptser considers the FSIN prohibition to be incorrect.
"We can not allow someone imprisoned for divulging state secrets to continue to be an information source for the special services of a foreign state, " official representative OF FSIN Aleksandr Sidorov told Interfax.
The All-Russian Movement "For Human Rights" gave a letter from Mikhail Trepashkin to Aleksandr Litvinenko dated November 20. The letter said: "... In August 2002 I reported, that I met near the "Kitai-Gorod" metro with a former colleague of the URPO FSB of the Russian Federation, V.V. Shebalinym (at his request). He stated that the USB FSB RF...had created a "very serious group", which will "would deal with anyone connected with Berezovsky and Litvinenko" ". In an open letter of November 23, Trepashkin writes: " In 2002 I prevented the creation of group to kill A.V. Litvinenko ". Former Lieutenant Colonel of the FSB Aleksandr Litvinenko died on November 23. Shortly before his death he accused President of Russia Vladimir Putin in his murder.
On December 5, in conversation with a correspondent of PRIMA -News, commenting on the statement of the FSIN, Liptser noted that the matter in which Trepashkin was sentenced, is not related to the investigation of the circumstances of Litvinenko's death and his sentence does not limit Trepashkin's right to give significant information in the Litvinenko case. Liptser noted that her client is serving his sentence in a penal colony, and the law does not forbid him to leave it. But IR -13's administration illegally limit's Trepashkin's freedom of movement.
Russian authorities have stated that they will assist in the investigation of Aleksandr Litvinenko's death, and the prohibition of Mikhail Trepashkin's meeting with British police will indicate their deviation from this obligation, emphasized Liptser.
Trepashkin is serving a sentence on the charge of divulging state secrets, which human rights activists and Trapahskiin's attorneys consider to be manufactured.
