MOSCOW, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- A Russian court has ordered a Chechen rights group which has exposed abuses in Chechnya in the past to close down.
Stanislav Dmitriyevsky of the Russian-Chechen Friendship Society has vowed to appeal the ruling, linking the court decision to the recent killing of a Russian journalist who was a strong critic of Russia's actions in Chechnya, Mosnews reports.
Dmitriyevsky's group, which fought off a similar closure attempt last year, has come under increased official pressure in recent months, said the report. Earlier this year, he was given a two-year suspended sentence for allegedly inciting ethnic hatred. The group said prosecutors in the closure ruling cited a new law making it illegal for an non-government organization to be headed by a person with a criminal record. http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php?StoryID=20061013-123902-1285r
