On March 15th, attorney Mikhail Trepashkin declared an unlimited hunger strike to protest against the refusal of his conditional early release. On March 15th, the Sverdlovsk Provincial Court refused his writ of appeal of the ruling of the Tagilstroyevskey Court of Lower Tagil, which came to the same decision on November 24th, 2005.
Trepashkin's attorney, Elena Liptser, reported to a correspondent of PRIMA-News that on March 16th, Trepashkin's defense attorney Dmitriy Rozhin was not allowed to visit him in the Ekaterinburg investigation isolation unit, despite having obtained appropriate permission from the Sverdlovsk Provincial Court. Prison management justified this by pointing to the fact that Trepashkin will soon be sent to a penal colony.
Trepashkin was sentenced on the charge of divulging state secrets. Trepashkin’s attorneys and human rights activists believe the charges to be fabricated.
