ST. PETERSBURG, Russia—An African student was stabbed to death and another was seriously wounded in separate attacks that Russian prosecutors called likely hate crimes.
The students were assaulted on the same street as they walked from the subway to their university dormitory Saturday night, law-enforcement officials and a student group said yesterday.
In the first incident, attackers slashed a student who managed to escape, said Aliu Dumkara, head of African Unity, an advocacy group for African students in St. Petersburg. He said the injured student was either from Zambia or Kenya. In the second attack about two hours later, a Cameroonian student was stabbed and killed, Dumkara said. A Namibian friend ran away uninjured, he said.
Police offered few details about the crimes, including whether they were believed to have been committed by the same group of people.
"According to my information, the attackers looked like skinheads," said Andrew Suberu, deputy head of African Unity.
The victims were studying at St. Petersburg's Water Transport University and lived in a dormitory where many foreigners are housed.
More than 15 people in Russia have been killed in apparently racially motivated attacks this year. Last year saw 44 such slayings, according to the Moscow Bureau of Human Rights.
The group estimates that Russia is home to some 50,000 skinheads and numerous neo-Nazi organizations. http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1135552209296&call_pageid=968332188854&col=968350060724
