Activists from a Georgian youth organisation plan in the near future to establish connections with the Belarusian opposition. Representatives of the organisation, called Kmara, told journalists a group of activists plan to go to Minsk on 3 July to meet representatives of a Belarusian youth organisation.
A member of the Georgian group, Mindiya Siharulidze, said that at the first opportunity and with necessary funding in place they would go to Minsk. “We plan to hold a series of meetings with the local youth organisation and share our experience”.
According to him, it is planned to send a small group to Minsk which would be joined by other Kmara supporters according to the size of Belarus opposition meetings. Kmara played an active role in the Georgian protests back in November 2003, and in the protests against the former Adzharian leader Aslan Abashidze in spring 2004.
Shortly before the Kmara announcement a group in support of the Belarus opposition was formed in the Georgian parliament. Included in its ranks are members of the pro-president United National Movement, Givi Targamadze from the parliamentary committee for defence and security, his deputy, David Kirkitadze, and the parliamentary deputy Koba Bekauri. The parliamentary deputy speaker, Mikhail Machaviani, also belongs to the fraction.
