Mikhail Trepashkin Appeals to UN General Secretary
Russian political prisoner Mikhail Trepashkin has appealed to Ban Ki-Moon, the UN General Secretary, asking to help his release on parole and reconsideration of his criminal case. Trepashkin’s appeal also calls for the issue of political persecution and human rights abuses in Russia to be put on the agenda of UN General Assembly session this September.
The Russian authorities have imprisoned Mikhail Trepashkin, a lawyer and former FSB officer, on fabricated charges. The true reason for his persecution is believed to be his professional work, which implicated Russian leaders in terrorist attacks on Russian citizens. In particular, Trepashkin alleged that Russian authorities were involved in the apartment block explosions in September 1999.
The conditions of Mikhail Trepashkin’s imprisonment are extremely hard. Human rights activists believe that Russian special services are plotting to kill Trepashkin before his prison term expires this autumn. Anonymous sources from Russian prisons confirm that suspicion. http://www.chechenpress.co.uk/english/news/2007/09/04/04.shtml
