17.04.2007
MosNews The White House Monday sharply criticized Russian officials for their handling of weekend protests, the UPI news agency reports.
Authorities in St. Petersburg detained scores of individuals after protesters engaged in a March of Dissent rally Sunday, just a day after a similar protest in Moscow led to the arrests of 250, including Russian chess champion Garry Kasparov.
We are deeply disturbed by the heavy-handed manner in which this weekend’s demonstrations in Moscow and St. Petersburg were broken up by the authorities and by an emerging pattern of use of excessive force by the authorities in reaction to similar events, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said. Perino said she doesn’t think President Bush has expressed his opinion directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin yet, but Perino said Bush would urge the Russian government to reiterate its commitment and attention to respect fully the international standards involving freedom of speech and press and the assembly —- freedom to assemble.
