The Russian ship Merchant Brilliant was stopped on Friday last as it attempted to leave Dublin Port. The International Transport Federation stopped the vessel from leaving, as it believes the labor agency owes the crew around 150,000 in pay arrears.
A High Court order was obtained to detain the ship. The Federation's inspectors say they have uncovered evidence of systematic underpayment and claim that the 20 Latvian and Russian crew members may be owed as much as 150,000 in back pay
The ITF says the vessel will not be released until the crew has been paid. Earlier this month, another Russian ship, the Merchant Bravery, was involved in a similar slave labor activity and had to pay thousands in back pay.
