The Associated Press reports that up to 170,000 victims are trafficked from Russia, Ukraine, and other East European countries annually. 70 percent are trafficked to Germany, France, and other West European countries. The other 30% are sent to Israel, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Thailand. Ninety percent of the prostitutes in Southeast Europe are victims of sex trafficking.
The economic and political turmoil from the collapse of the Soviet Union combined with a reduction in the opportunities for legal immigration to the West has made sex trafficking a major problem. Borders that once were well guarded are now porous. Young women, who dream of a better life in the West, have turned into a gold mine for the sex trafficking network. With threats of civil war breaking out between the Slavs and Albanians in Macedonia, tourism is decreasing, and the economy is growing worse. Meanwhile, selling women's bodies for cheap sex remains a steady, lucrative business for the captors and pimps. Criminal organizations in Russia have found sex trafficking to be very profitable and play a dominant role throughout Eastern Europe.
According to Rudolf Perina, a former U.S. ambassador to Moldova, the sex trafficking network is very large and powerful. "You’re talking about big international rganizations," he said.
The UNHCR report notes that Europe's most smuggled and trafficked nationalities include Afghans and Iraqis --who "have a very high rate of recognition as refugees." At the same time, these are the nationalities that have been the "main target of all European anti-trafficking and anti-smuggling activity." (refugee reports).
