(Hasan Sarbakhshian/The Associated Press) An overflowing of Muslim pilgrims from Russia for the hajj By Michael Schwirtz Sunday, December 16, 2007 MOSCOW: Gulsine Fatakhudinova, a 56-year-old Tatar Muslim, came lugging suitcases to pray at the lime-green mosque in central Moscow - one of dozens of people who arrived one recent day, bundled in weighty coats, fur hats and other winter garb that they would soon cast off, at least temporarily. Barred by the Soviets for decades from carrying out the most sacred rite of Islam, they were among the tens of thousands of Russian Muslims traveling this year to Saudi Arabia to join the masses in Mecca for the annual pilgrimage, or hajj, to one of Islam's holiest sites. The main reason is a sharp increase in rents. During the past two weeks the staffs of both the independent Chechen Society newspaper and the Union of Chechen NGOs (SNO) have been evicted from their offices in the building . The reason given for the Chechen Society eviction was some “incorrect” comments made by the paper’s editor, Timur Aliyev, on the recent Russian Duma elections. The SNO office was closed down after the organization’s director, Taisa Isayeva, refused to wear a headscarf. However, a House of the Press official revealed in ... >> full...

The reason was the absence of a headscarf. Mandatory wearing of headscarves by women and young ladies was introduced in the building of the Print House after appointment of Shamsail Saraliev, 34, former assistant of Ramzan Kadyrov, to the post of Minister of Press, Information and National Relations of Chechnya.
