An overflowing of Muslim pilgrims from Russia for the hajj

MOSCOW: Gulsine Fatakhudinova, a 56-year-old Tatar Muslim, came lugging suitcases to pray at the lime-green mosque in central Moscow - one of dozens of people who arrived one recent day, bundled in weighty coats, fur hats and other winter garb that they would soon cast off, at least temporarily.

Barred by the Soviets for decades from carrying out the most sacred rite of Islam, they were among the tens of thousands of Russian Muslims traveling this year to Saudi Arabia to join the masses in Mecca for the annual pilgrimage, or hajj, to one of Islam's holiest sites. Their numbers have swelled in the past several years, thanks largely to Russia's ...

NGOs plan to quit Grozny’s House of Press

By Umalt Chadayev

GROZNY, Chechnya - A number of Chechen non-governmental organizations whose offices are located in the House of the Press building in downtown Grozny plan to vacate these premises early in the new year. The main reason is a sharp increase in rents.

During the past two weeks the staffs of both the independent Chechen Society newspaper and the Union of Chechen NGOs (SNO) have been evicted from their offices in the building .

The reason given for the Chechen Society eviction was some “incorrect” comments made by the paper’s editor, Timur Aliyev, on the recent Russian Duma elections. The SNO office was closed down after the organization’s director, Taisa Isayeva, refused to wear a headscarf.

However, a House of the Press official revealed in ...

Union of Chechen NGOs kicked out of the Print House in Grozny

The Union of Non-Governmental Organizations (UNGO) of Chechnya was forced to transfer its office from the Republic's Print House after the conflict of the head of the Information Centre of the Union with securities of the building.

The incident took place last week in the building of the Print House. The securities of the building flatly refused to let Taisa Isaeva, head of the UNGO's Information Centre, in. The reason was the absence of a headscarf. Mandatory wearing of headscarves by women and young ladies was introduced in the building of the Print House after appointment of Shamsail Saraliev, 34, former assistant of Ramzan Kadyrov, to the post of Minister of Press, Information and National Relations of Chechnya.

"In the morning on December 12 our office was visited by the ...

Chechen Committee of National Salvation complains of pressure by the authorities of Ingushetia

Representatives of the Chechen Committee of National Salvation (ChCNS) state that human rights activists are under "violent pressure" exerted by the authorities of Ingushetia. A respective statement has appeared today in the website of the ChCNS.

"On December 11, 2007, the ChCNS received a warning about violation of the legislation from the Department of the Federal Registration Service for the Republic of Ingushetia (FRS for RI)," runs the statement. The warning reports "about the documents allegedly non-presented by the Republic's Public Movement (RPM) ChCNS to the Department, including the documents on spending monetary resources and use of other property."

"At the same time, the RPM ChCNS has long ago presented the complete list of necessary documents to the Department of the Federal Registration Service for the Republic Ingushetia," representatives ...
