The Group of Movement in Czechia

November 19 in Prague, the director of Department on an asylum and the Migratory policy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Czechia Tomas Haisman received ”The Group of Movement”.

Mister Haisman has told about the system of inquiry and granting of asylum in Czechia and a situation with granting statuses to refugees from the Chechen Republic.

Since the beginning of 1999 about 10 000 people have asked an asylum in this country and 95 percents from them are refugees from the Chechen Republic. For all this period 212 people were recognized as refugees, possibly, this number includes also those who named themselves as the Chechen.

In 2003-2004 years, there was the basic stream of refugees from ...

Protesters in antifascist picket ordered to pay fines
RUSSIA, Moscow. 10 protesters, who took part in an antifascist picket outside Moscow Mayor’s Office on 27 November and were subsequently dispersed by OMON special militia unit, were ordered to pay fines on 29 November for breaching picketing regulations. Magistrate Alexandra Kovalevskaya of district No. 369 levied fines of 1,000 roubles against men and 500 roubles against women.

Yelena Ryabinina, a protester who took part in the picket, told PRIMA-News correspondent that two people asked for their cases to be tried in their absence. Protesters later learned that in some cases, the militiamen who arrested them were not the ones who made the record of arrest. Some arrest records were made by different officers, but written in the same handwriting, said Ryabinina.

The trial continues.

Russia: Lawyer Of Nalchik Detainee Says Suspects Being Tortured
Russia -- Nalchik detainee (torture?)

The U.S.-based pressure group Human Rights Watch recently accused security forces in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkariya of using abuse and ill-treatment to coerce confessions from suspects detained over October's militant raids on the regional capital Nalchik. Lawyers for people arrested in the wake of the attack now say they have evidence their clients are being tortured in police custody.

Prague, 6 December 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Pictures are circulating of Rasul Kudaev before and after his arrest following the deadly Nalchik raids.

Before, Kudaev is at home, looking relaxed and happy.

After, Kudaev is almost unrecognizable, with the lower part of his face swollen to grotesque proportions.

His lawyer, Aleksandra Zernova, along with other Russian lawyers have sent 15 such photographs to Western media and human rights organizations.

Russia urged to find journalist’s killers

(AFP)

20 February 2009

MOSCOW - Russia came under international pressure on Friday to find the killers of journalist Anna Politkovskaya after four men charged in connection with her murder were acquitted by a Moscow court.

Prosecutors vowed to appeal over the way the case was conducted after a jury acquitted the suspects on Thursday, in a verdict that came after three months of hearings that failed to shed light on the 2006 murder.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

None of the four accused had been charged with pulling the trigger or being the mastermind of the killing of the investigative reporter, who was highly critical of Russia’s strongman and current Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

The United States called on Russia to continue the investigation.

“We regret that her ...

The acquittal of three men over the murder of a prominent Russian journalist in Moscow has sparked anger among her supporters.

Anna Politkovskaya was shot dead outside her home in Moscow in 2006.

Human rights groups say the case was mishandled and they have called for greater protection for journalists in Russia.

After months of detention, the three men accused of being involved in Ms Politkovskaya's murder were delighted to head out of the Moscow courtroom and into the cold, fresh air as soon as they heard the jury return 'not guilty' verdicts because of insufficient evidence.
