HRW: A Killing’s Prelude And Aftermath

A Killing’s Prelude and Aftermath

Questions and Answers About the Murder of Natalia Estemirova
July 18, 2009

Q. Why was Natalia Estemirova murdered?

A. We believe that Estemirova's killing was a brazen attempt to silence those telling the truth about human rights violations in Chechnya. She was the link between victims and the rest of the world. She connected victims to human rights defenders from Russia and beyond, to journalists, and to avenues of justice, like the European Court of Human Rights.

The murder corresponds to a new, uglier phase in the counterinsurgency campaign in Chechnya. The hallmark of this campaign has been an atmosphere in which law enforcement and security personnel have been able to abduct, torture, kill, and arbitrarily detain anyone they believe to be related to the insurgency in Chechnya with no fear of punishment. These actors have also pursued collective punishment against the families of suspected insurgents by, among other things, ...

FINROSFORUM: When They Came For Me…

When they came for me…

Posted on the July 19th, 2009 under Civic ActionHuman Rights by Kerkko Paananen

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

Then they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
I did not protest;
I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
I did not speak out;
I was not a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out for me.

RFE/RL: A String Of Silenced Voices On Chechnya

A String Of Silenced Voices On Chechnya

July 16, 2009
By Claire Bigg

Natalya Estemirova's killing is not an isolated act of violence -- it is the latest in a string of assaults and murders of human rights campaigners and others who have denounced abuses in Chechnya and the surrounding republics. Many say the trail of blood leads to Chechnya's leader, iron-fisted Ramzan Kadyrov.

Mourners remember Stanislav Markelov and
Anastasiya Baburova.
Assailants gunned down Stanislav Markelov, a prominent human rights lawyer, on January 19, 2009, on a street in central Moscow. Markelov had represented numerous victims of rights abuses in Chechnya including the Kungayev family, whose daughter Elza was raped and murdered by a Russian colonel. Anastasiya Baburova, an intern for the "Novaya Gazeta" newspaper -- where slain journalist Anna Politkovskaya worked until her death -- was with Markelov at the time of the shooting and was also killed.

RFE/RL: 'Such People Are The First To Be Killed'

'Such People Are The First To Be Killed'

by Aleksandr Cherkasov

Natasha Estemirova was grabbed as she was leaving her apartment building in Grozny on July 15 and bundled into a white car. She just had time to yell out that she was being kidnapped. A few hours later, her body was found in neighboring Ingushetia, not far from the Rostov-Baku highway.

Her hands were bound. There was bruise on her face. There were two bullets in her chest and two more in her head.

A full day later, I feel like a mindless parrot shrilly repeating the same thing over and over again. It was the same when they killed investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya. And when they killed defense attorney Stanislav Markelov. Back then, people also called me and asked: "What do you think? Who was the killer? Will the case be solved?"

This is the last thing I want to talk about, ...
