Georgia: Pankisi Chechens Head Home

16-Jun-05

Returning Chechen refugees leave behind them a hard life in Georgia, but have little hope of finding a better one back home.

By Jokola Achishvili in the Pankisi Gorge (CRS No. 291, 16-Jun-05)

"There is nothing good for my family here. There will be nothing good there [in Chechnya] either. But if I don’t leave now, when they [Russian officials] are taking us, I won’t be able to do it later. I have no money. Maybe I will be able to find a job. In any case, there is nothing here."

Lela Margoshvili, a 35-year-old teacher, has lived as a refugee for almost six years in the village of Jokola in the Pankisi Gorge – a portion of northern Georgia, next to the Chechen border, which is home to a large number of ethnic Chechens, or Kists.

Chechen ombudsman refuses to work with Memorial organization

GROZNY. June 15 (Interfax) - Chechnya's commissioner for human rights Lema Khasuyev said he will not cooperate with representatives of the Memorial human rights organization.

"Memorial has a principle: the worse the situation in Chechnya the better for Memorial. That is why I will not work together with them [Memorial representatives]," Khasuyev said on Wednesday.

The Memorial administration is "pursuing their only goal - to work off the money received from Western structures," the ombudsman said.

Chechen Republic of Ichkeria: The Russian Invaders Have Taken Hostage Relatives of the Chechen Commander Dokku Umarov
The Russian invaders have seized and held hostage Umarov Ruslan Hamadovicha (43), Ataeva Roman Ibragimovicha (38) and Umarova Zaurbeka Lechaevicha. Umarov Ruslan is the native brother of Chechen Commander Dokku Umarov and was apprehended by Russians on 24 February this year. Umarov Zaurbek, his cousin, was detained in 2003, and Ataeva Roman, a distant relative, was taken hostage in Ingushetia on 28 October 2004.

For a long time, and widely practiced, Russians have captured relatives of Chechen politicians and militaries, with the purpose of forcing them to end their struggle. It should serve as a sufficient reminder that in the beginning of December 2004, invaders and military ...

EU Charter Bad for Russia?

Friday, June 17, 2005. Issue 3189. Page 4.

A political commentator with close links to the Kremlin said Thursday that that the EU Constitution's rejection by French and Dutch voters boded well for for Europeans and Russia.

Gleb Pavlovsky said the rejection would help temper ambitions of the EU bureaucracy and improve Russian-EU relations. "There was a split between the elites' game of a unified Europe as a superpower playing geopolitics, and the Europeans' desire to live in a normal, sovereign environment," he said. (AP)
