Sex Trafficking in Europe

The Associated Press reports that up to 170,000 victims are trafficked from Russia, Ukraine, and other East European countries annually. 70 percent are trafficked to Germany, France, and other West European countries. The other 30% are sent to Israel, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Thailand. Ninety percent of the prostitutes in Southeast Europe are victims of sex trafficking.

The economic and political turmoil from the collapse of the Soviet Union combined with a reduction in the opportunities for legal immigration to the West has made sex trafficking a major problem. Borders that once were well guarded are now porous. Young women, who dream of a better life in the West, have turned into a gold mine for the sex trafficking network. ...

The Bloody Massacre in Pankisi

The Bloody Massacre in Pankisi

There is one more black page in Chechen-Georgian attitudes for the period of Saakashvili's regime. The Georgian authorities kill two ethnic Chechens-Kists, inhabitants of Georgia , members of the local Kists' Djamaat. One week ago one more Pankisi Chechen, Margoshvili, was killed, who ostensibly wished to pass the frontier of Georgia .

At five o'clock in the morning (06.07.2005) the Georgian special troops approached the house of Sultan (Vaha) Gumashvili, an inhabitant of Duisi, who lived in the center of the village. Nobody knows the further development of events. It is known only, that for the moment of the beginning of the fight a relative of Vaha, Avto, was together with him in the house, who did not want to leave Gumashvili alone.

It is also known a little about the reasons of the arrival of the Georgian special troops. ...

Relatives of the missing block road

On 16 July, people from the village of Khashuri, Georgia, joined the Khachapuridze brothers' relatives blocking the Gori-Tskhinval road near the Ergneti police post and demanding that the bodies of the abducted Georgians be given to them. The Khashuri residents blocked the road near the post of Russian peacekeepers in Megvrekisi, says a Caucasian Knot correspondent.

The four Georgians (three Khachapuridze brothers and a resident of Khashuri - editor's note) went missing in the zone of the Georgian-Osetian conflict more than 40 days ago. Their relatives have learnt from unofficial sources in South Osetia they are already dead.

Government gives no comments on European Court ruling

The press service of the Russian government has refused to give comments on the 14 July ruling of the European Court of Human Rights concerning six residents of Chechnya. "We have no comments, we are not informed of the problem," a spokesman for the Russian government said to the Caucasian Knot correspondent.

"The task on the European Court is not to correct single mistakes of national courts but to raise national legal and judicial systems up to the European level," says Aleksandr Cherkasov, a representative of the Human Rights Center Memorial - the organization that represented the applicants in Strasbourg. "And from this point of view the role of the state is great. When the judgement of the European Court is made, the state should change the consideration of specific cases and the work of the ...
