CHECHNYA. (Information from the Society of Russian-Chechen Friendship, Union of non-Governmental Organisations, and Chechen Committee of National Salvation). In Chechnya there is no end to disappearances, killings, “special operations”, “addressed cleansing operations”, and arbitrary behaviour by Russian forces, the Chechen militia, as well as other unidentified groups.

14 October
Grozny region. In the early hours, armed men took a 35-year-old man, Adam Ozniev. In the evening he was found unconscious on the outskirts of his home village, Prigorodnoye.

Vedeno Region. The early hours saw Russian bombardment of the surroundings of Tsa-Vedeno. There were no reports of casualties.

Shali region. In a so-called zachistka in Serzhen-Yurt, carried out by Russian forces and pro-Moscow Chechen units, 22-year-old Bislan Alahnov was detained. Apparently a member of the Chechen Interior Ministry, his whereabouts remain unknown.

Legal experts prepared report on ethnic discrimination  in Krasnodar territory

Next meeting of representatives of legal expert organizations of the region passed in Kabardinka settlement (Krasnodar territory) on October, 9th where the public hearings on the theme " Ethnic discrimination and xenophobia in Krasnodar territory: problems, practice, ways of overcoming ", organized by the Novorossisk committee on human rights (NCHR) and NGO "FRODO" at support of MakArturov Fund took place. Under the organizers’ invitation in the hearings the chairman of Adyghe Khase of Black sea Shapsugs Madjid Chachuh participated.

Public hearings participants discussed positions of a report project of the legal expert organizations concerned numerous facts of ethnic discrimination that take place in Kuban as well as growth of xenophobia and nationalist moods in the region. Federal forces grab Dagestan rights activist
DAGESTAN. The Chechen human rights centre reports that early on 13 October, federal forces took away a Dagestan human rights activist, Abdurakhim Magomedov. The man was grabbed from his home village of Novo Sasitli, located close to Chechnya, and believed to have been taken to the Russian army's military base at Khankala, outside Grozny in Chechnya. The man is a co-chairman of a human rights organisation, Civic Alternative.

Magomedov is 70 years old. He is well-known in Dagestan and throughout the North Caucasus, and translated the Koran into Avar, one of the languages of Dagestan.

«No end» to Chechnya rights abuses, says Amnesty

Amnesty International today urged the EU to take a tough line with Russia on human rights as it claimed to have found new evidence of abuses in the North Caucasus region.

Amnesty said its field workers had discovered there was "no end to gross human rights violations" in Chechnya and Ingushetia.

In a briefing paper published today, the group said its research implicated the Russian authorities "in the torture, abduction and secret detention of civilians".

The report was released prior to the arrival of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, in London for an EU-Russia summit hosted by Tony Blair next week.

Amnesty hopes to put pressure on Mr Blair and other EU leaders to seek assurances from Mr Putin about improving human rights in Russia. The human rights group's paper claimed a new trend in abuses had been detected.
